Yes AMD fans it's a NEW socket!

AMD today (04/03/2014) announced the introduction of its AM1 platform featuring the AMD quad-core and dual-core “Kabini” APU into the component channel for system builders. Combined with motherboards from leading manufacturers, the new AM1 platform will deliver award-winning Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture and AMD “Jaguar” CPU cores, and bear the AMD Athlon™ and AMD Sempron™ APU brands. This will create an ecosystem of flexible and upgradable platforms at compelling price points that also feature USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s support, and microATX and miniITX motherboards for sleek and power-efficient small form factor PCs. Availability of “Kabini” desktops and components are slated to be on-shelf in select regions beginning early April, with global availability expected on April 9.

“AMD continues our APU technology leadership by introducing the AM1 platform with ‘Socketed Kabini’, an APU designed for the mainstream market,” said Bernd Lienhard, corporate vice president and general manager, Client Business Unit, AMD. “The AM1 platform gives us a great opportunity to deliver a flexible infrastructure environment, and provides a multitude of options for consumers and system builders looking for upgradeability packed into an extremely affordable solution.”

“Socketed Kabini” allows for exceptional productivity, web browsing, and compute acceleration for the larger mainstream, emerging markets looking for outstanding value and performance at low power.

The AMD AM1 platform delivers balanced computing with DirectX® 11.2 and Windows 8.1 support to mainstream markets. In addition, motherboard manufacturers including, ASRock, ASUS, BIOSTAR, ECS, Gigabyte and MSI are poised to deliver a range of next- generation desktop motherboards based on socket FS1b. These motherboards will support the latest specifications of native USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s for AMD Athlon and Sempron-series APUs for the AM1 platform.

I seem to remember reading something on kitguru 2 days back but that was just rumour and speculation but AMD have just released this officially, so I figured I'd drop it in here for all to see.

The one thing I had a chuckle about is, we can now build our own PS4/XBONEs seeing as we will now have access to the "Jaguar" cores this is going to start a whole new breed of Steam Boxes that's for sure.

haha yeah i never thought about that wow

Well half of the Xbone and PS4 at least.. Can't throw two 4 core APUs on one mobo can we?

I read about this this morning. Very interesting and hopefully at very strong price points. Wonder if they will release a laptop version? Would be interesting to see a decent spec'd laptop with reliable battery life at a budget option.

Interesting point.

It has been a while since I was truely excited about new hardware but these days it's hardware with low power consumption that seems to grab my attention, we have seen team Green getting greener and now it seems team Red are changing their colour too, it makes a change from the recent AMD juice munchers *cough* 9590 & Volcanic Islands GPUs

I'll be keeping an eye on these new chips and keep this updated best I can.

why the hell do manufacturers still try to advertise their products with things like sata 6GB/s and usb3, it's nothing special.
anyways, i suppose this is the next media PC platform.

I'm interested to see how these perform! Should be good for HTPCs and maybe low-end / low power gaming rigs. I think these would make a great mobile League of Legends rig :D

I want a jaguar core mobile phone ;D. This could be a good replacement for my media server i3 550. I'm still waiting on the current gen of apus without gpus but it looks like they're a no go :(

I'm definitely tempted to get one of these and stick it in a tiny form factor. :)

I briefly had a laptop based on an A4-5000 which I'd image will be pretty much identical to what these will bring to the table. While no powerhouse, it was definitely good enough for anything I'd want of a laptop. Also surprisingly, the little fella actually handled games (indies) very well too.

Hummm if these AM1 chips are cheap i may grab a cpu+mobo just for some inexpensive overclocking fun.
I'd say it's unlikely you'll find the motherboards in question actually have overclocking options.

As for cost, $60 is the figure AMD have quoted for the motherboard and APU.

If it is indeed that cheap it will make for some great HTPC fun :).

I wonder how well they will perform as a dedicated steam streambox?

I'm sure someone will make an overclockable motherboard for AM1. It'd be an excellent learning tool for overclocking/setting benching records for cheap.
