new 3930k build plan for music/video/gaming

Some friends and I have started messing about with video creation/editing. Unfortunatly, Sony Vegas and a 4 year old machine aren't really cutting it any more and we want a new computer to run Adobe Production Premium cs6. I'll also be using the new computer for making/recording music mostly using FL Studio. We will probably end up gaming on it too. I imagine the usage of the computer will be pretty evenly split across those three areas.

Here is what I've put together on newegg. plan on going dual gtx 680s also but they were out of stock so couldn't add to list.

I went with 2 of the corsair kits for a total of 64gb of ram. was planning on using 32 of it as a ramdisk(scratchdisk)

I got the 120 ssd for the OS drive. I wanted to have a seperate drive for my games so that's what the 240 ssd is for. Got steam running to an independant ssd on my current system and I like it.

I also decided on the h100 'cause I'm to much of a baby to actually water cool and I hate the look of giant cpu fans.

I'm mostly curious if it's worth it to get the 2x gtx 680s. I have the money but I don't want to waste money if I don't need to. I've been playing a lot of civ 5 lately and my current pos (i7930, 5870) bogs down a lot. I would hate to spend this much to still not be able to run all the games out right now at full settings. I use a 2560x1600 main monitor and a 1920x1080 secondary.

I'm also wondering if the ram is good. Would it be worth the large price jump to go for faster memory?

also if someone has a suggestion for a less hidious motherboard it would be awesome.

Any suggestions/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

This is a nice system. If it where me I would replace the Coolermaster HAF X and the 1200 PSU with a Corsair 650D and an AX 850 PSU. The Sabertooth X79 is a great motherboard. If you don't like the colors look into the P9X79 Pro or of the Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5.

64 GB of RAM is a bit of overkill, 32 GB would still be a little excessive but much more reasonable. The DDR3 1600 will work perfectly for your needs.

You can always start out with one GTX 680 and add another if needed.

Thanks for the input. Any reason against the haf x? Besides cosmetic I just liked how large it was. New egg psu calculator said I would need over 900 watts for this with sli 680s. I feel like the whole buy one card now get another later never works out. Has anyone actually got a second card later on?

Also, I was hoping to hear if any one had experience with a single gtx 680 and civ 5. If that gets decent fps I image I wouldn't need the second card.

Wow, don't know how I missed a review that did civ 5. Didn't think it was that popular. And its right at 60fps! Thanks for the help sir. You have single handedly saved me ~$500. <3

The styling of the HAF X does not sit well with me and the case is starting to feel a little dated. A lot of people really like this case and I am sure it will suit you well if you like the style. As for the power supply, I have had really good experiences with Corsair products. Their PSU’s are top notch, and the AX850 will be good enough to run GTX 680’s in SLI if that is what you decide to do.

No worries!

If you really wanted to get your monies worth you should buy a 7950 and overclock it. It will perform as well as an overclocked 680 or 7970

im building a similar system to this. not as extravagant ill have less ram and only 1 680 but similar. if you use the cooler master psu calculator you can put in loads of stuff even the overclock speed and voltage you plan on running if you know.

try it out as you can put in loads of stuff like hard drives and pci cards and even water cooling.

i went with the cosmos 2 case primarily because of looks but it has lots of different ways to configure the case and lots of room if you ever go water cooling or want to change things easily. its a more expensive case but the way i look at it is a case will last a long time unless you get bored easily.

edit: i have been playing civ 5 too alot but my old system isnt even as good as your old one
