I have Virgin Broadband and the modem is in my sister's room (the loft) next to her computer and normally its connected straight into her computer but i've become accustom to having some net too :p so i want the internet in both her room and mines which is on the floor below.

To get the internet into my room i have a cheap set of PowerlineAdapter thingys i picked up from Maplins and when i plug the modem straight into the adapter and leave my sisters computer out of the connection i get perfect internet that never goes wrong.

But my sister obviously also wants some internet so i had a wireless router lying around a Netgear WGT634U and what i've tried doing is connecting the modem to the router and then one of the ports to my sisters computer and the other one to my adapter. Problem is when i do this either it will give no internet to either of my computers and both PCs say "limited connection" or it will give us both the internet for a bit (2hours on average and maximum 2 days) but then just cuts off and goes back into not letting either of us having the internet...

I'm assuming its the router as direct connections to either computers are fine.. I may be wrong as i have no idea about networking, i need help...

so if you have a wireless router, then you have a wireless adapter?if so just use that.I am on virgin as well and I have my wireless router downstairs plugged into the modem and I run a wired pc downstairs and two wireless upstairs with no problems

So you've got modem with only one Ethernet port? or is the modem USB?

I read a quick review on the router and it labeled it as a 'media' router with a USB port on, hence asking what seems to be a rather odd q to others.

My Modem has both Ethernet and USB 1 out and as i understand you can't use both at the same time, the router i have no idea about it has 5 ethenet ports (1 in and 4 out) and usb 2... Wireless never works in my house someone said its because theres lead somewhere in my house i dont know :S and TTL i have no idea what the hell a ethernet switch is... :(

Again i'm lost about networking...

Just **** another ethernet in to your home plug &router then mate and you can both use it at the same time :D

lmao i'm assuming you meant get another adapter thingy and then plug it into my sisters computer so we both have a network interface through the adapters i'm trying that now but it seems which ever computer is turned on first gets the net and the other one doesnt and if you plug them in while the PCs are on neither of them get the net :s...

its not that because when i connect the modem directly to the powerline adapter it doesnt fail it runs smoothly the problem is connecting her comp and mines at the same time... i suspect the router but am not sure so dont want to buy a new and and find out its not that..

I'd go for the router isn't configured properly. If there was problems with the signal on the powerline the pc connected too it wouldn't work when its the only one online.

Limited connectivity "generally" comes about after the IP address isn't being resolved, and "generally" (again) if an IP address can't be automagically obtained the computer defaults one that looks like 169.254.blah.blah. U often get them on unconnected firewire ports.

What could be happening here is the router isn't allowing enough IPs to be allocated via dhcp. Often, as a basic security, it'll limit the number of IPs.

When u are connected with "limited connectivity", if u go into Run->cmd and use the command > ipconfig /all, u'll almost certainly see the above default IP address. This being the case, u'll need to get into the settings of the router and ask it kindly to co-operate with the number of devices asking for an IP address.

Aye with both Ham and Rasta thinking its the setting i believe it is too now the only problem is i have no idea what the setting should look like so that it should let two computers pull a connection from the two ethernet ports any ideas? Hams already shown me two of the setting i need to change DCHP and IP/DNS but he said theres more...

Screenshot of the settings on my router with just only the internet and my PC connected... all ive done so far is enable the UNPN thingy...

Oh i have an idea...
