Hey guys, thinking of building a new rig but have been out of the loop for awhile not sure whats good and whats not. I am thinking i7 and a 58** butother than that, not really much of a clue. Anyone fancy helping me out with the details and speccing me up something? :)

Been hearing alot about SSD are more mainstream now and thats interesting me as my OS drive.

My budget is £1000 can stretch abit if its worth it, I don't need monitors, OS, keyboard or mice.

Main use will be gaming, uni work and films. :) Hope you guys can help.

Thanks alot.

Nope, far from being.

Not come across one either personally or in the business. Perhaps one hidden inside an Eee, but couldn't confirm that.

Reason they'll not be in mainstream for some time to come is their price per gig.

For an OS drive, u could get 64g cheapest one u can find if u like. Personally having had to have increased a few Vista partitions beyond 40g just for the OS, I'd be weary. And with a i7 build, u may/should plumb for 6g, which in effect could have the OS wanting 9-12g for a swap (without u telling it not to).

128g and ofc the price is doubling, in this respect u may find urself settling on something like a cheaper gfxcard cos of ur drive outlay.

Imo, build ur rig, with standard drives in mind, be happy with it - and if it comes to pass that u have some credit in the future and/or they release the mainstream SSDs (that more or less r/w the same as a fast standard drive), u can get one then.

This is ofc just my opinion.

Awkward time for buying a rig just now.

if you must build one now then, its i7 920 D0,evga x58 4way sli and 2 5870's get a raptor drive as your OS and a fast storage drive lke a cavier black, and a CM 840 case any dvd drive and a psu over 850wats like corsair tagen or CM RAM ither OCZ BLADE or dominator GT

Not a bad time, an awkward time.

With a large outlay of cash, knowing ur not steering people in directions that may they may regret soon enough.

Hey if u need to build "right now" there's always an easy answer. But for me, splashing £1k isn't something I take lightly.

I don't really understand much of your answer and personally, I find spending £1k on something I use daily for numerous hours aswell something which is an interest to me personally and as a career isn't nessacarly a bad way of spending the large amount of money. :)

It's an awkward time because:

- ATI have their new architecture out and it is pretty damn good, but nvidia haven't replied. Theirs could be better. Also the X2 variants for ATI are due late November

- i9's are coming Q1 2010 so your new i7 will be old(er) tech and will fall in price...

If you must buy now you were on the ball with i7 920 and a 5870/50. The rest is personal taste IMO

Indeed. And like I'm saying, £1k+ is a lot of cash (to me anyway) to spend to have regrets as early as november.

But yeah, if u absolutely need to buy now, that's different.

Ah, thanks for the productive answers. :)

I think it'll be worth holding out then and saving up abit more money for the newer tech. :) Thanks alot.
