NEED HELP! PC wont turn on!

Ok, i tried to turn my pc on this morning and it wont turn on, nothing happens. I have not touched it since yesterday and the only thing ive changed in the last month is the graphics card drivers yesterday that i got from the ATI website.

I was thinking that it is either the PSU or Mobo, but i have no spare parts to test with so i need to diagnose this problem without testing :(

When I switch the psu off at the back, then on again the fans all flash blue and spin for a half a second.

I have a surge protected 8 way, and everything else attached to it still works.

I moved the plug to a different socket in the 8 way but that didnt make a difference.

I have used a different power cable that i know works, but that did not help.

I have removed my M-Play remote out of my PC, but that made no difference.

I took the power button off the mobo and used a screw driver to try and turn the pc on as i thought the button could have gone, but still nothing happened.

I dont really know what else to do.

There was a couple of things that could help diagnose this problem:

When my cpu was @ stock, after pressing the power button the pc beeped straight away. when overclocking the cpu it took the pc 3 seconds to beep after pressing the power button; but the pc would turn on as soon as the power button was pressed and the pc worked without any problems.

The last 3 days, after pressing the power button the pc would wait 3 seconds to turn on, then a further 3 seconds to beep. Could this be a sign of the psu starting to break?

Please, please help me, my specs are in my profile. If I do need a new psu please can u suggest what one to get that is a good make but cheapish (like £60) as I dont have the £ to spend on my pc atm. I know some peoples Hipers have died on them.

Thank you in advance.

Edit: I have tired clearing the CMOS

Also if the mobo is not telling the PSU to turn on then the fans wont turn on, is this correct?

Does the mobo get any power at all? Is the little LED on?

Ermm, Have you got the CMOS clear jumper set to clear?

Maybe you could try clearing the CMOS? :)

Other than that you need to check the PSU, Smell it? And do you have a PSU you can test the PC with?

I havnt actually looked at the LED, and I cant cause im at uni.

Ive cleared the CMOS and that made no difference.

I havnt smelt the PSU, but no smell was badly comming from it this morning. Ill have a smell when i get back.

I dont have another PSU to test with which is a problem. I dont want to buy a new PSU to find out its something else.

Strip down to cpu, gfx and one stick of ram, cmos reset and see if you can boot...

I will try that when I get home, and post back with results when i can.

Can anyone else shed some light?

I got your msj Tim but had no credit to reply :(

I didn't have a Hiper PSU, I'm using a Tagan atm and it was my mobo that caused the weird problem when turning the pc on. Mine basically switched off as soon as I pressed power, then I'd have to press the power button a few times to get it on.

Without another PSU it would be hard to rule out the problem. Has your PC worked fine since getting to the new property (wondering if it has been bashed about a bit). Might be worth reseating everything, try with 1 stick of RAM and as little as possible connected.

PC has been fine for the last month after I put in the Athlon 3700, apart from the last 3 days, after pressing the power button the pc would wait 3 seconds to turn on, then a further 3 seconds to beep.

Im hopeing it isnt the mobo, as its a

to set up and it harder to get hold of then a PSU. Ill try the PC with just the mobo and graphics card attached to the psu with one stick of ram when i get home. Im guessing if it does power up then my mobo is ok? and its my psu thats gone?

Ok I managed to borrow a 500W PSU off a guy i kinda know, and poped it in my PC. It booted fine, straight into windows and I primed my PC for 3hrs with no problems.

So it was the PSU that went and luckly it didnt take any other components with it. Therefore I need to order a new PSU, im tempted by the SilverPower 600W from Tekheads.

dabs.com seems to have a really good price on the GameXStream 600W:

Ok, ordered the SilverPower due to the review here on oc3d by XMS. I should get it from Tekheads on Monday (yey no Royal Mail shipping :) )

I can't decide between them either, I shall have a look at that review!

I know its a bit late but I cant recommend the Corsair 520w Modular PSU from SpecialTech enough, they did it for me at £59 and with free postage its a real bargain.

Hope this SilverPower one you have ordered is ok :)
