Ok, so I built my new rig...It has its up and down days but today it makes me want to cry. Here is the story..Got an X6800, p5n32-sli se delux, 2 gigs xms2 1066, 7950 gx2.

Originally when I installed my mach II on this board and cpu I used a ton of seal string which prevented the evap from contacting the CPU. Was not fun at the time but kind of helps now. The CPU temp in that "not right" configuration was about 4c to 8c at idle but went crazy fast higher under load.

After correcting the seal string issue and mounting it right this time (got a little too excited) It was running at -35c or so at idle and would never go below -30 under full load. Games Games Games and more Games...on problem. Today I was playing for a bit and shut her down. Came back 2 hours later...started her up and no problems.

All of the sudden the CPU temp went from -33c to 97c in literally 1 second and continued to rise from there. By the time I figured out why the PC probe warning horn was going off and shut down It was displaying 108c. I let it sit for 2 minutes and started it back up again only to be stopped during post for high cpu temp. showed +75c with prommy reading -55c. WTF!!!!!!! Now everytime I go immediatly to the bios it shows the right temp (-33 or so) and pc probe also shows the right temp but everytime a few minutes later it goes crazy high and and keeps rising.

Must be a bad temp sensor. Anyone else ever had this happen? What should I do? The only other thing that plays into all this is that I just got a logitech g15 gaming keyboard with the lcd. It only displays basic stuff so I downloaded a bunch of stuff after reading about how to make it display whatever I wanted it to.

So I had motherboard monitor 5 and speedfan and this and that...all having to do with monitoring CPU temp so I could export those readings to the lcd. Then this problem started. Is it possible for one of these programs to be the cause...maybe a virus or something??

ANy help greatly appreciated...Im going to try and get a screen shot of a graph so you guys can see what it looks like...it really is CRAZY!!!

Go back to the original HW and SW configuration that previously worked with the Mach II, and then see if the “heat spike” problem persists.

For just such a baseline recovery to a “golden system” I use Acronis True Image Workstation (http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/products/ATICW). It uses a second partition on another disk to store backup images. Within 5 minutes, I can restore my boot drive, even a new one of larger size, to pristine post-install cleanliness.

if the temps were going that hi it would shut down surely?

A complete re-install (or system restore prio to all the 3rd party temp monitoring software, or proper uninstall of these might work) should sort those issues out if the BIOS reads negative temps then I suggest that the software packages you are using are not set up correctly.

Of course you could have a dodgy temp probe or a leakey mach unit, but its unlikely, for the mafh especially if the display temps have not changed.

Sounds like its a read error rather than a contact or mach problem. If it were contact you'd have crappy load temps and you probably wouldnt see such a pronounced jump in temps. Certainly wouldnt jump from -33 -> +75 just like that.

As someone mentioned above, can you stick the stock cooler back on and see if that resolves the issue? Maybe its a sub-zero read problem, when the diode hits a certain temp (does this occur only at idle?) it spacks out and reads incorrectly?

I think it will be all your lcd and monitoring programs causing the problem unless it was your prom reading high temperatures on the display??

If the Mach II was reading -35 or below then the unit is working properly. It does suggest it's a conflict of software causing the problem.

well, just as strange as it appeared it left. It must be a bad sensor or one thats going to take a crap as after about 30 minutes of down time, the bios read the cpu temp at 97c. Booted into windows and of course the warnings were going off and what not but I let it keep running. I was monitoring the temp in speed fan and after about 10 minutes the temp instantly went from 97c to -36. Wish I would have taken a screen shot. I knew it really wasnt that hot as the mach 2 temp had never moved at all. Stayed at a constant -56c. Oh well...this new rig has all kinds of crazy problems but hey....its fast and Im willing to put up with it! ;) thanks guys
