Hi all,

Been away for a while but i finally got my rig up and running and for the most part its a beauty.

However i need to get a new GPU to keep up to date with the times and to get rid of my old 8800GS

I was going to get the AIT HD 5770 from amazon for £137 http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B002VFP0GQ/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=A17AS5ETPMZ9A1

Not sure if its worth the cash but it is in my £150 price range.

Could someone take a peek and see what they think or suggest an alternative please, i would like to have dx11 so i know that i will probably have to go with ATI seeing as Nvidia is lagging in this department at the moment.

Many thanks.

dlads.

RIG: Windows vista ultimate 64 bit

AMD Phenom 2 x4 Black edition 3.0ghz (not overclocked) I dont know how yet lol

4 gig ddr2 ram 800mhz

Nvidia Geforce 8800GS 384MB ddr3 ram

Arctic freezer pro cooling on CPU

Stock cooling on stock bog standard case

550 Watt g7 Power supply

x2 500gig internal hdds HItachi and maxtor.

Thanks Guys, but i dont want a dx10 card, i could do with an ATI card as i said in my thread, i wasn't sure if the HD 5770 was the best for my money for sub £150?? Maybe it is.

Have you considered speeding just a little bit more and going for the 5850, the 5850 would be able to handle any game at high settings without a problem. Or wait a month or 2 see if the price goes down a bit.

I would definitely go for the 5850

It's not a little bit more, by my reckoning its nearly £100!! not pocket change to me that, if i was to go with an expensive card it would be the newest ATI, but like i said i just don't have that kinda money.

Then the 5770 should do just fine, it performs pretty close to the 4890 and the GTX260 and it's in the budget limit. The only other option now would be the 5850, but only if the prices drop, though that should still take quite a while.

I think that when nvidia releases Fermi the prices will drop

a 4890 and a gtx 260 will destroy a 5770 especialy overclocked

price/performance ratio a 5870 is the way to go IMO check TTL's review at minimum a 5850

I know the 5770 is a budget one, i just want to run dx11 games at a 60+ frame rate with most and if not all graphics on, would that do the trick?? I'd wait for the new nvidia one but its gonna cost (i imagine) about £400 + so thats not even an option.

It's crazy the way a gpu alone can cost the same as 3 xbox 360s lol, and some console gamers claim that their consoles are better than pcs!!!! lol how??

the only time the prices every stay higher than the cost of a couple of 360s is when they first come out...and just like the "extreme" intel and amd chips they don't stay like that...they usually end up getting a large price reduction.

I would say go one step up from the 5770. With the 5770 you will have DX11 support, but the you might not get to fully experience the graphical advantages if there are certain games that demand a faster card. That's why you might be hearing some people on the forum still recommending a DX10 card, they are faster and cheaper, but in your case I think something just a tiny bit faster than the 5770 would be great.

I'm not sure the 5770 will be able to run all dx11 games at a 60+ frame rates with most effects on. What resolution are you gaming at?

dude the 5770 will play any game out there dont worry, the prices WILL drop considerably when fermi comes out, its been happening every year since the nvidia/ati war started, if you want to sell more you drop the prices, common sense.

go for the 5770 definatley, small fast and cool, also more expandablity i.e xfire.

budget cards are hugely underestimate these days, i mean im still using a 4670 and i play Mass effect 2 all the fancy settings up 1440x900 just fine.

Hi all, and thanks for all the responses, youve done me proud, and i think i will wait till they come down a little in price, so thanks all.

Just to answer a few of your questions and to have my say lol, I usually run windows and game at 1024 x 768 as i see it as being optimal for most games, but i recently got a hdmi cable for my tv which i run off a dvi to hdmi fitment from the 8800gs and i too can play mass effect 2 with all the graphics switched on full at very high resolution (1920 x 1120 i think it was) at perfect speeds, it's just that i wanted to see what dx11 had to offer, if anything, and if i was to buy a new card (i think thats what my system is lacking) then i would go for one of the newer ones.

I know the 5770 isn't the fastest card, but i just wanted to know what you guys thought about it, I will not, EVER lol, pay £300 for a card, it's a ridiculous amount of money to spend on one component.

But like i said, thanks all the same. looks like ill wait for the prices to drop, i mean take a look at this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-HD...7?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1265326690&sr=8-7 omg thats crazy.

I think i'll go for the 5870 and if it doesnt come down in price then i'll grab a 5770 and have done with it, it must be better than my 8800gs?!?!?

Cheers.

PS: oh i just wanted to say about the fermi, i think that it will smoke the competition, nvidia, has been lagging for a reason. :-)
