Hi All,

Whenever I embark on a new PC, you guys have always helped me choose my spec. I now need a 2nd PC (prob as my primary and will use existing for VMware vSphere 5.x testing).

Current spec:
CM Storm Scout + Coolermaster Silent Pro 700W Modular PSU
OCZ 120GB Agility 3 SSD - SATA-III - Read 525MB/s Write 500MB/s
G-Skill 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX Memory Kit CL9 (9-9-9-24)
Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator and Fan Socket LGA1366, LGA1156,
Asus P8Z68-V PRO Z68 Socket 1155 8 Channel HD Audio ATX
Intel Core i7 2600k 3.4GHz Socket 1155 8MB Cache Retail Boxed
Black 3.5" Bay Internal Card Reader with SIM and IR

New Spec
CM Storm Trooper Case
Samsung 840 240GB SSD
Asus Sabertooth Z87 board
32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1866Mhz RAM
Intel Core i7 3770k 3.5Ghz
Zalman CNPS11x Performa V-Shaped Dual Heat Sink Cooler
Corsair TX 650w PSU - 80plus Bronze certified
Card Reader to be added
LG BlueRay/Writer (already have it)
OCZ 120GB SSD (already have it)

I am contemplating on using the New Spec as my primary PC. Mostly for browsing, video and photo editing, emails etc. And the Current Spec as a VMware vSPhere test-bed (assuming spec can handle it).

Ideally I would like to spend no more than £900.

I would be grateful for your thoughts...

Thank you for your help!

Jay

those rigs look pretty much the same.
i would change the cpu cooler, for a few bucks more you can get an nh-d14, also if you don't use that rig for rendering etc. 32GB RAM are completely overkill, 16GB are more than enough. same for the cpu. maybe add a seagate barracuda for storage and you are good to go.
i haven't spent much time with the requirements of VMs, so i don't know what you spefically need. i just gave advice on what's best for a normal rig.

I would put the 32gb ram in the vsphere set up as if you have a few vm's running the 16gb will disappear very quickly.
My home setup is running 48gb ram and i'm already needing to upgrade as running tight.
You may want to check the motherboard to see if its compatible. Alot of installs fail by not having the correct nic drivers. You can get around this by replacing the motherboard or by buying a nic (I find intel nic's are best for esxi).

Thanks for the advice folks.

I will definitely stick with 32GB RAM - shame the board cannot take more :)

Any other advice on the spec would be most welcome. I want to ensure I am getting bang for buck and that it will allow vSphere...

Thanks

i don't know if it was a typo but the 3770 k is a 1155 socket CPU and the Asus Sabertooth Z87 board is 1150, they aren't compatible.

Good spot! Should I change the CPU in the spec or the board? Whichever the case, please can you give me the new model?
