Mysterious Grey Square!

It appears that I have a grey rectangle on my desktop that I can't interact with.
I've fiddled around with my processes & there is no program this is attached to, but when I click on the show desktop button at the bottom right hand corner of my desktop it goes away & then comes back whenever I launch a program.

I added the pictures as attachments attachments.
Please help!

It will be there as soon as I login & happens randomly.

I also run a ASUS M5A99x EVO, but I don't have AI suite installed

So it happens randomly. Open msconfig.exe, disable all of the startup items and reboot. I still suspect it's one of the startup items that is causing the issue even if it does happen randomly.

that is typically the "show desktop" button on windows 7, but no idea whats taking control of it atm
it almost sounds as if its a graphics driver issue

unlock taskbar, right click taskbar and then toolbars. i'll bet you have a phantom toolbar loading
in the background.
