My Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X

Thanks for the Witcher 2 video. Ubersampling is way too intensive. Personally I don't notice the difference with it on and it's not apparent in videos either.

Have you got Vsync disabled in the advanced settings? I couldn't tell the difference until I noticed I had Vsync enabled and realized my FPS was being limited.

I mean visually. I have Vsync turned off. Do you see a visual difference with it turned on (ubersampling)?

Oh, I thought you meant performance wise. There is a slight difference, things seem a bit more shiny and smooth looking with it on but not that much more that it is worth the FPS you lose.

Yeah, I agree. Even with ubersampling off the game looks fantastic, so not a big deal at all.

How do you think a 290x Tri-X OC card would do against your 290? I haven't found any reviews for it when i looked a few days ago? You think it could tame the hotter core and still be quiet?

Not sure to be honest, although all the Sapphire Tri-X's are the OC version. The reference AMD 290s were clocked at 900-950mhz and boosted to 1000mhz. With the Sapphire Tri-X cards the stock clock is 1000mhz with no boost, so they label it as OC .

Considering there was next to no difference in temps between the AMD reference 290X and 290 though, i'd say that it should be the same story for the Sapphire Tri-X versions.

I would give or take a few degrees obviously but then again if it clocked to the same as the 290 versions i wonder how the performance would scale. They should also theoretically clock higher as well because they made the 290x grade. But who knows.

I've seen some reviews of the 290x version and it does really well with the chip, better than the asus one easily. The main issue with them is price. They're still one of the cheaper ones but still the 290x is too expensive.

Stupid retailers and bitcoin fanatics:(

I'm seeing a R9 290X at the moment for €460 from one of the online retailers I buy pc hardware off.

It is a reference one though. No sign of non-reference ones where I buy my hardware yet.

Hey SieB good job on doing this but did your card come with BF4 or if it doesn't I'll just go with 780 cuz of Shadowplay. :)

Shadowplay is better than BF4 easily, its just shadowplay is a bit overrated imo.

Yep :l. I'd have bought another 280x by now but they've gone up in price too much. The 290 is going to outsell the 290x easily imo.

The card does indeed come with BF4 :) Check with the retailer before you buy though because they might not all come with it, but from OCUK they do.

There is an alternative to Shadowplay using Bandicam. It does the exact same thing Shadowplay does on Nvidia cards and uses the GPUs built in H264 decoder. All the vids in my tests except for The Witcher 2 were made using it, only down side is it's not free. Well, you can use it for free, but with the free version you are limited to 10mins of recording and you get a "www.Bandicam.com" watermark on the vids.

All details here

However, AMD are working on their own version of Shadowplay with an upcoming all new version of Radeon Pro called Radeaon Pro Infinity. So sooner or later there will be a free option for a Shadowplay alternative with AMD cards.

No probs :)

Here's a question for you:

Are you getting problems with older DirectX 9 games with the R9 290? There are several I just can't launch, I get crashes 100% of the time while launching the game, and have to hold in the power button to reboot.

I doubt it's hardware related, because I've had several long gaming sessions on it in other games thus far, and I notice it's a documented issue. The 13.12 drivers even mention "May resolve crashes on DirectX 9 legacy applications".

I've not tried any DirectX 9 games to be honest.
I'd say it's more likely driver related as well, what games are crashing on you? If I have them i'll give them a try and see if I get the same crashes.
