My New Build over the weeked.

CRAZYCAP

Hi Guys, well I have finally left socket 775. On the weekend I purchased a Gigabyte Z68X-UD3R-B3, with 8GB (2x4gb) of Corsair Vengeance and an i5 2500 processor. I know what you guys are going to say 'why not get the K?' but I plan on updating this processor somewhere down the line so it will do in the interim. I am using the same case PC-K62 and H50 cooler (push pull). So a question for you guys is 'how far can I overclock (i believe its 3.8) and can anyone she some light on the settings I require in the bios and is this the best overclock I can get from this chip.

Thanks guys in advance and I will post pics later of the build.

The multi is essentially locked on the 2500. You are at max right now with Turbo-boost.

Thanks mate. Appreciate the quick response. In any case this CPU combo is a massive leap forward from the E8400.

Using turbo boost the 2500's will go to 4.3 easily enough.

100.3 X 43 mutlti. On my MB the 2500 will only let you run a 43 times multi on a 2500.

It just depends how the gigabyte MB works.

Hey Cerbrus2, do you have bios setting (or guide me to a page) where I can get the voltages etc to use just as a guide.

I have my i5 2500 at 4ghz with a BLCK at 105 and multiplier at 38. memory is a bit over the 1600mhz rating. Is this safe? Temps for each core are 33,35,27,33 idle.

Hey Ruthless. So if I leave the BLCK at 100 the max overclocked I can get it 3.8ghz???? I know the multi goes to 41 but does that only work in turbo. Sorry Still learning mate.....always learning.

Ok guys looking for some feedback on if i can improve this. I have my 2500 (non-k) at 4ghz @ 1.35v (104.8 x 38) and would like to know if this is the max I can get or has anyone got the bios settings to get more out of this chip.

Prime 95 temps 57,62,58,57 after 1hr.

ground control to major Tom....lol or anyone.

Hi,

You know, I didn't even know it was possible to OC the non-K's using the multiplier setting! I mean, they're "multiplier locked" yet you've unlocked it!

To be honest I'd be VERY HAPPY with what you've achived my friend! These SB CPU's are outstanding, I came from a Q6600 at 3.6 myself and out of the box my 2500k (prior to me tweaking) made it look silly - and the Q6600 was a stunning chip!

I get the urge to push things further, especially as you're doing it with a chip that isn't supposed to. However do take some time to enjoy the speed, and the free speed, you've already got

I too would be interested to hear peoples thoughts on overclocking the un-overclockable.

Cheers,

Scoob.

Thanks Scoob. Yeah I came from the C2D E8400. Even though the chip served me well @ 4.5ghz, this chip blows me away. I am over the moon with the overclock and the 1600 Corsair Vengeance is running a little over the 1600 @ 1660 which seems to be stable. Just ran some benchies and my score in 3dmark vantage was P31632. My 3dmark 11 score is P5754. Pretty stoked.

My friend, whose system I helped build, came from a Q9650 @ 4.0 to his 2600k, retaining the water cooling and the 2x 480's from the old machine. Even he was blown away by the performance increase of his 2600k at 4.5. The 2600k definitely works his cards harder that the old system, and that Q9650 was no slouch by any means.

Debating a 2nd 570 myself to go SLi and possibly watercool but to be honest there's no game that's made me need to upgrade, it's just a want at the moment

We'll see what demands Skyrim makes and decide then.

Just found my 3D Mark '11 score URL: Link - just shy of 6k! Might try again now I'm at 4.6 rather than 4.5

Have some more room on the GPU too, I was at 800 for that run and can get 925 stable...but warm! Will keep it at 800 for day-to-day though as that's the highest it's stable without changing the volts. I think my Vantage score was around 25k but I cannot remember...will give it another run & check.

Cheers,

Scoob.

Yeah Scoob it's always good to see comparisons with other peoples rigs. I have an MSI GTX 570 and like you (now that I have a board that supports SLI) I'm thinking of grabbing another one.

I am sorely tempted to get another 570, though I'd need to get a better PSU at the same time. My PSU likely could support a 2nd 570 from an Amps and Watts perspective, however it just hasn't got enough PCI-e power connectors (just two) despite being an "SLi Ready" supply.

Still, my single 570 has coped admirably with everything I've thrown at it thus far (I run at 1920x1200, so high but not super-high res.) Originally I was planning to do my big spend on my next rig, and ulitmately make this one the replacement movie server (being a Z68 mobo, so ideal with the build-in GPU) but it's just such a good machine I'm tempted to build on it.

Actually, I'm pretty indecisive. I have lots of ideas, but can't make my mind up! Watercool, SLi & watercool, internal rads, external rads, case mod to fit big rad...or just save my cash for an Ivy Bridge Build on water from the start with AMD/nVidias latest and greatest...

Cheers,

Scoob.
