My new 2600 (not k) cpu is 4.2ghz?

Just find this a bit strange..
my non K i7 2600 is running at 4.2ghz under load. (well 4.19) And i dont know if this is because of the mother board. or if its because i did not reset the bios when i pulled out the 2500k which was clocked with 42x multi.

funny thing is it has lowered the bus speed. from 101 to 100 ( i can tell that easy because ram speeds arent the full 1600)
But i was very suptized to see the thing running at these speeds...

i dont want to go in to my bios to check because it may reset it.. But is it normal behaviour or not?

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/14819260?

p.s my board is a Z77

Have you confirmed this with CPU-z ? and with a peek in the bios, because windows 10 task manager claims my cpu speed is 5.13 ghz while under load, when its actually 4.2ghz and pretty static at that.

aida 64 and 3dmark.. say it is. so does occt "but that is to be expected as it uses aida for monitoring)

And cpuz says 16-42 multiple.. And i dont want to peek in the bios incase it changes it lol.

It's completely normal, mate. On older non K series CPUs Intel left in 4 "bins" which can be overclocked using the Turbo overclock feature. It would seem as you have a Z77 board it has already detected that and overclocked the "bins" for you.

Basically on older models (like the I7 2600 and I7 3770) Intel still left in limited overclocking. Bins are basically values on your multi.

I just looked on the ARK and your CPU had a boost clock of 3.8ghz but because you are using a Z77 it's overclocked the "bins" for you :)

went and looked in the bios. and its actually decided to set max core multiple for all cores to 43,
Not sure why its only doing 42 in windows, but hey im happy i wasnt expecting 4ghz+ to start it.

also happily it "combined with the 780 oc" has given me 1st place in 3dmark firestrike 1.1 for systems of the similar spec..
havent managed that since i had a Q6600 and a hd5770 and i didnt even have to do anything to the cpu. (i guess its a pretty good one)

You can set the multi to whatever you like in the bios dude but the chip will just stop itself going any further :)

it seems to actually run at 4.2 even with all 4 cores active..
Perhaps that is because my bios tells it to use the same boost clock regardless of cores in use?
