Ok here is my parts list for my preposed rig. The project will be split into two parts the first part will be getting it working. The second will be adding in so extras. The object is to future proof me for 5 to 7 years with a bit of luck. Money is of very little object but my resorses are not unlimited over the two parts i have £6500 to £7000 at best but more likely £6 to £6.5. Total project time 18 months start date June 2013.

Quick update I am editing this all the time as I get more info!

2nd update obviously any new tech GTX 700*, IB-E ect will be an option

First thing is to dump that power supply. Its not very good at all and way overpriced. Get a Seasonic Platinum 1000 which is considered the best power supply on the market and costs $100 less and will still be way more juice than youll ever need. You could actually go with the 860 watt version and be fine.

2nd thing is you dont need a 2nd GTX690. A single 690 is a pair of GTX680's which will rip to shreds any game at your proposed resolution of 2560x1440. Unless youre going to use 3 of those, you will never see the benefit to that 2nd $1000 bill you laid down for that 2nd GTX690.

16GB of RAM is also a little much as well unless youre going to be doing a lot of video editing and such. Wont hurt anything and isnt that much more expensive but you wont really benefit from it.

Id opt for a 2TB hard drive or something like that instead of a Raptor. A 7200RPM drive will be fast enough to load your games and the extra storage will come in handy cause games are getting bigger these days.

So in a nutshell, just get the one GTX690, a 2TB Western Digital Caviar HDD and a Seasonic Platinum 860 watt power supply and youll be fine cause youve picked a superb processor and motherboard so youre set there.

Thanks for your help but 860 watt seems a bit low remember a GTX 690 can easily draw 250w you start adding in water cooling ect and I could see brown outs but i will check out the 1000 for sure

Drop the raptor and buy caviar blacks instead

you dont even need 1 690. drop that to SLI 670/680

i was looking at the 690 rouite and have opted for sli 680 instead, will look awesome when i watercool next year

i have SLI 680 on a 3770k with a 760 watt PSU i can even watercool on this PSU so you dont need 1000w at all

would change the fans for Corsair SP120's too

jst my opinion OFC your free to spend your money how you want but running a 690 isnt as amazing as it sounds. (i done weeks of research into this)

If youre drawing less than 500 watts at the wall, youre drawing less from your power supply so a 860 watt would be plenty. But if youre still concerned, get the Platinum 1000 watt version and rest easy.

You win I have read there reviews in the past and they don't dick about the 1000 it is.

When I priced it out 2 680 was more than 1 690. Current 690 at 749 GBP and I have done some a lot research as well but I will double check my info

Yeah, when you have just about every reviewer saying something is the best on the market, there has gotta be something to it. I really want a 860 watt for my rig! I usually upgrade power supplies after 3-4 years and Ive had mine now for a well over 3. Ive never paid $200 for a power supply but I have to admit I like the idea of having the best one in my case! :D

well i have 2 superclocked signature 2 680's which cost 359 each that only equates to £718 a saving of £31 for better performance
 
you can try and future proof your machine as much as possible but throwing cash at it isnt going to work, i give my machine 3 years 4 tops before it will need replacing again to be on par with games coming out then. there is not a chance you could future proof your machine for 7 years and in all honesty spending £6500 or more on a machine is mental
 
the rig in my signature cost me 2.2k i think if not less cause i bought things for the wifes computer too.
 
Yeah you could spend a LOT less and get the same performance. Youre overspending in a lot of areas. For example you could do something like this and buy it all in one whack:

Intel i7-3770K -- £256
Asus Sabertooth Z77 -- £170
EVGA GTX670 FTW x2 for SLI -- $576
XFX 850 XXX series -- £98
G Skill Ripjaws 2x4GB -- £30
Samsung 256GB 830 SSD -- £150
Seagate Barracuda 3TB HDD -- £96
Pioneer DVD drive -- £18
NZXT Switch 810 case -- £135

Thats £1529 then throw in a copy of Win7 or Win8 whichever you prefer and add another £100 and youre set. Thats enough horsepower to rip any game to shreds at 2560x1440 with plenty of cash to spare. A 3930K is a superb chip but it wasted on a gaming rig. Unless youre doing a lot of rendering and other very thread heavy work, you wont be using that thing to its fullest potential. And even if you do rendering work, a 3770K is definitely no slouch in that department and will come within spitting distance of the 3930.

So your willing to use 6.5k now, but not willing to spend a dime in the next seven years?

Just because you can spend, doesn't mean you can't do it atleast somewhat efficiently. Think of it this way: You can spend 2k every few years on build that has top of the line performance and you would have a kickass system for the next decade vs your current build which will belong in a museum in 7 years no matter what you buy.

A most compelling argument sir but their is a flaw. No fault of yours just lack of information 3 years ago I a built a rig that used good parts not the best stuff but good enough and was told it would last 5 years with ease by several people who I believed were right. Now here I am 3 years later with a rig that just wont cut it I can run Far Cry 3 just and as for the likes of Crysis 3 I don't know so I might seem nuts and probably am but I still have 6 months to make my plan. But I like your input I could be dead wrong and thats why I am here.
 
I agree with the set-up posted earlier. Honestly, Far Cry 3 is an exceptionally demanding game, I've even heard that a single high end card like a 670 or 7950 won't run more than 40 fps when you set it all to full settings.

Truth is that most games are mainly GPU intensive, you don't need 6 core CPUs and 32GB of RAM. Most of todays game PCs even use i5 CPUs as an i7 doesnt give a real advantage, games simply don't use it. Same for RAM.

Your longevity is going to depend on your GPU and not so much your CPU. A 3770K will be a fine gaming processor for 5 years to come just like a Core 2 Quad Q6600 from 2006 is still a viable gaming proc now when paired with a powerful video card. Hell you can still have a capable gaming rig with a Core 2 Duo E6600 if you paired it with a fast GPU! However a video card from 2006 or even 2008 isnt going to be even entry level by todays standards.

That rig I listed for you will be playing games on max settings for 3 years easy and when those GTX670's run out of steam, just drop a pair of GTX870's in there and youll be set again. Games arent becoming more and more CPU intensive because theyre all having to be developed to the lowest common denominator as in consoles. That 3930K is not a better gaming processor than a 3770K. Its last generation architecture (Sandy Bridge) with 2 more cores basically. The 3770K is the fastest per core and since games still barely use more than 2 cores, there is no benefit in paying a lot extra for 2 extra cores with SB-E.
