Hey guys, So today my msi Radeon hd6670 keeps acting up, first the screen shifts over so I can only see part of my screen and then it gets fuzzy, finally the screen turns black. I have had this card for a year now. I want to upgrade to a 7870 but its going to take some time to get the money, so what should I do in the mean time?:(

hi mate

yeah sounds like its on its way out id go for a hd 6870 thay are not the best cards but would make a good stop gap untell you can get the card your after
im in the the uk i got one for my better half for her computer as she plays facebook game untell she melts the computer i think i paid about 79 pounds
for it works very well and best of all as amd bring out new cards it makes the older ones nice and cheap
hope that helps im new here or green as some mite say so im sure there will be some people here with more ideas for you best of luck hope you get a new one before your one dies

Hi Superfly
When does the shifting occur? In games? Out of games?
What are the temps on your gpu when this happens?
It could be a driver issue with monitor or the refresh rates are sending out incorrect outputs.

Its normally during games(first time i saw it was on the menu screen of DiRT Showdown), the temps are normally 60c but on a rare occasion temps up to 106c which is rare. The drivers have never acted up before. I did have it clocked at 900mhz for a long time so I am think that I just killed it. I am currently lookingat some 6950's on fleabay, are those still good or should I just take my time and save up for a 7870/7950?

I found this one on fleabayhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127562 for about $170 or 105 pounds or there is this on a msi 6870, on fleabay http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127560 for $130 or 80 pounds also on fleabay

I would suggest getting a 7850 if you can spend a little more cash, you could probably grab one for around $210. Just in case, could you try running on a new monitor and play a demanding game for a few minutes and run Hwinfo64 to monitor cpu/gpu temps. I just want to rule out that possibility before you go buying a new card. (though it's all up to you if you want an upgrade :p)

Edit: another monitor, not a new one :)

I did run it on my 32" 1080p LG LED tv and ran Dirt 3 on ultra and it did start acting up again and then it froze. I am thinking about the 7870 Tahiti LE. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131484
After seeing Tom's review of the Tahiti LE and seeing that it out preforms 7950's I was all in, just got to start saving.... At least it will be more future proof than before.. My only fear with this card is that I am going to be running a custom water loop and they don't make blocks for this card and I'm not sure if they will or not

I am too, I have only seen it once, I did lower the clock, and it ran Dirt 3 on MED-Hi at an average of 58fps, which isn't bad at all. Still freezes up occasionally though. What do you think the chances of water block for the tahiti LE be

You should save for the Tahiti LE 7870, If your card started acting up after a driver update then it's easy. if not .. one of your components is faulty, probably your graphics card. Maybe underclocking it a bit might change things? Also check for dust buildups on the heatsinks.

I disassembled the gpu and cleaned the fans and heatsink off. Right now I have it clocked at 795 mhz, but since the day I got it, it's been running 900mhz overclocked with the memory oc'd at 1150mhz.

If you want a really cheap little hold-me-over card, keep an eye out for a 9600 gso, i've seen them brand new on occasion for 30$. My brother got one several years ago, and that puny thing ran bad company 2 on medium/high settings with about 50 frames per second. (edit: at 720p of course) It was uncomfortably close to my 6750 in performance back in the day :|

Sounds like a good idea, I just found dual 9600gt's for $55 sounds like a no brainer to me

that should be good on just about anything @ 720p.

The good news, possibly in March, AMD 8000's for desktops (certain mobile models are already on the market) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Islands_(GPU_family)

What makes this news even better? Well... Remember all the intel/nvidia partnership rumors? ... a lot of diehard nvidia fans are gonna be ... pissed... to say the least  http://www.anandtech.com/show/6202/...tafson-as-chief-graphics-product-architecture

Yea hopefully this will hold me over and can't wait for the new amd cards. I will have to ask my nvidia friends what they think of that lol

quick question! dual 9600gt's for $55 or a gtx280 for $72

Ok, so I just got a NVidia OEM GeForce GTX 280 for $62 with the shipping! Hopefully it is much better than my 6670 that has mini strokes every now and then. Will post an update of my rig project nightmare when I get it in the mail
