My first overclock

Hi All,

I have just concluded my initial tests on my first proper overclock! I have been testing with Prime95 for just over 8 hours now without any errors (fingers crossed). I would be interested to know what you guys (who know heaps more than I do) think, please feel free to be completely constructive, I can take it :)

Here are some brief stat's;

AMD Phenom II x 3 720 BE @ 3.3GHz (Stock 2.8GHz) v1.3375 (LLC Enabled)

Temps Idle; 22C

Temps Load; 34C (Whilst running Prime95 > 8 Hours)

I will run the system through 3d Mark 06 later to review the impact on my scores.

I have been able to boot into Windows with 3.5GHz but it wasn't very stable for testing (I will work on this when I have some more free time)

Cheers

Alex

Looks pretty good. I have no experience with AMD but it seems like a good mild OC. Temps are really good too. I'm sure you might be able to go higher, but like I said, I have no idea how AMD chips handle.

Thanks Steve-O-

I have read some reviews where the CPU has been taken upto 3.7GHz, I have a good MB so I have no reason to believe I won't get there. The system is achieving 16300 points on 3D Mark 06 and is running everything I want right now easily so I am happy with that....for now. The new AMD CPU is very tempting though :)

have you just upped your multi for the cpu, when i got stuck at 3.5 i upped my NB multi see if that helps, but ime using 1.47vcore

@ AMDFTW

Hi,

Yes I upped the multiplier to16.5 from 14 stock, I did have to increase the vcore slightly to 1.3375 and I enabled LLC to avoid vdroop. The FSB and HT are stock so I am running a 1:4 FSB:DRAM ratio with my Corsair 1600MHz DDR3.

I'm pretty happy with the boost from this initial change and my temps are encouraging so I think there is plenty of room for improvement.

yer keep trying to push it fella, try for 3.8 or 3.7 not shure on ur max voltage but it might be around 1.45v

also i thought u left your BUS speed at stock?

if you leave it like that or increase the CPU speed and u hit instability then lower your RAM speed in the BIOS

What cooling are you using by the way?

Now at 3.6GHz

I did leave the FSB at stock originally but decided to push it up.

I am running my ram at 1600MHz (rated speed) now as I pulled the FSB back a little, had to increase the vcore a little to stabilise but I ran prime for an hour without an error. Temps idle 24C load 39C.

I have a Thermolab Barum HS with an Apache fan, and 3 x 120mm fans in the case.

I want to get some water soon though :)

hmmm keep going, take the bus back to 200Mhz then push the multi as high as it can go by that i mean stops booting into windows, then lower it by 1 or .5 then start on the bus increas by 1Mhz till unstable then lower by 5Mhz,then if ur not happy lower your RAM speed then keep pushing from then

also make sure before this u go bump the Vcore to the max volts ur CPU can handle or just below

ime at it lol,i had it booting into windows at 19x 200=3.8 at 1.5v but it was unstable so my current OC seems to be fine, max temp has been 55c loweste about 35c i might aim for 3.7Ghz if it does not require a big enough vcore bump

Its also about getting a balance between speed and life/heat. I've noticed with the summer heat my OC had become unstable (that or a bios update :/ ) so I've dropped to 3.8 Pretty good going so far though

1000th post!
