My First 4ghz Overclock (980x)

This time I got the same Fatal Error! on Number 9 Worker
sad.gif

I deceased the Core Voltage to 1.267v

But coming back into windows I have just got "Desktop Manager has stopped working" Have I lowered it to much?

Sound good
smile.gif
but a word of advise, only chance one thing at a time when OC'ing
cool.gif
But I don't think that a 1.28 Vcore will cause any problem but leave it at that for now until you get your Prime issue sorted with the threads failing
wink.gif

Well I'm no computer genius I just remember that I found out (on another forum) the the difference between QPI and DRAM voltage should not be more then 0.5... But this has not been proven the be the case but its safer to go with that for now
wink.gif

Your DRAM voltage is 1.65V which is normal and should not have to be adjusted.

Your QPI voltage is your IMC (Integrated memory controller) which is responsible for the communication between the RAM and your CPU. On i7, i5, and i3 it is located in the CPU itself.

So you should stay within 0.5V... In your case: your memory voltage(DRAM Vol.) is at 1.65 and you take that minus your IMC voltage(Integrated memory controller)

1.65-1.25=0.40V that's within the 0.5V margin that's recommended
smile.gif

Hope it helped

Yeah i would put the Vcore to 1.3V again and raise the QPI voltage to 1.3V

let me know how it goes
cool.gif

well I had the exact same problem and it turned out to be that the IMC voltage was to low and it would just fail on all the workers in Prime.. There are people that are running around 1.35V on QPI so i would try 1.35V on the QPI if 1.3 dose not work and if that dose not work I would lower the BLCK and raise the multiplier on your CPU
smile.gif

Well they have last more than they did before......

How long should I keep Prime95 running????

RAM on Prime95 is using 3.55gbs, out of 6gbs

If the temperature varies 2-4 Celsius, I would call that "normal", try downloading OCCT and see if the temp varies or try folding
wink.gif

So prime has been running stable now? I would run it for 30min its probably long enough to test the QPI voltage.. If its stable for 30 min at 1.3V QPI then start lowering your Vcore and run prime for 60min and if it runs 60 min without a error the lower the Vcore again and keep doing it until you get a error or Blue screen. Then bump it up 0.02 and you should be good
cool.gif
if not bump it up 0.01-0.005 until its stable again
wink.gif

3.55gb usage seams normal.

Thanks m8

Prime95 was running stable, had passed the first test and was onto the FFT's (No Idea what that is) So I went into Bios and put vcore to 1.290, and loaded prime95 again, but just as I was writing this message I got BSOD, so put vcore back to 1.30v

Ok seems you have found your limit on Vcore I would put Vcore at 1.31V just for a safety margin. And run prime for 60min and if it passes the 60min mark without a error you have successfully overckloked your 980x to 4Ghz

Is it safe to run at 4ghz for 24/7?

will putting the vcore up more, increase temps more, as NB is cooking how it is
sad.gif

Well i did a quick Google search and it seams that there are a lot of Rampage 3 users that have the same problem and that they replaced the stock thermal paste and the temp dropped 7c. Do you have the optional fan on the NB? If not it would definitively help.

A 24/7 overclock on 1.31V is not going to kill your chip before you want to upgrade it. But I would recommend asking around an maybe ask TTL what he thinks. As I have not been running a 980x for a long period of time (I don't even own a 98x
wink.gif
) on 1.31V so i cant tell you for certain. But be sure I would not say its ok to run at 1.31V 24/7 if I don't sincerely think so

Just a note i too have a 980x i need 1.42v QPI/VTT to run memory at 2000MHz with a 200BCLK with C8 timings! I also need around 1.25V for the X58 NB

I need 1.44V in windows to run 4.8GHz.

Ok thanks for the info, it sounds very reasonable, but hayley your running your ram at 1600Mhz right? that would explain the lower QPI compared to you..

Do you have a rampage 3 Extreme? and does your NB get toasty

OK I have set the Vcore to 1.31v (well closest it would go was 1.31256 (Something like that, although when looking a the volts they jump about a bit to)

Got Prime95 running again, so fingers crossed we are all stable now
smile.gif

I appreciate all your help guys, although I am still a n00b at this, I have learnt some stuff tonight
smile.gif

I wonder if I have to have higher volts, cuz my OC is 4009ghz, although am running 20x200

No RAM is at 2000mhz Timings 8.8.8.24, although CPU-Z says DRAM Frequency is 1002.4mhz but in bios its set to 2005mhz

No sorry I have the good old 790i haha
laugh.gif

Well ok the lower volts the better
cool.gif

And yes its normal for the volt to jump around a little.

4009Mhz is normal, just because you have 200x20 it wont run at exactly 4Ghz so 4009Mhz is to be expected (it could just as well have been 3999.9Mhz)..
smile.gif

I'm glad you have "learned stuff tonight"
wink.gif
I try'ed to explain the best i could even to my first language is not English
