MSI R9 390X Gaming 8G Review

Not sure, some of the numbers look a bit iffy. Asus GTX980 Matrix beating a GTX980Ti in GTA V for example, very odd.

I reckon driver stability and game optimization played a bit role there. Probably. [Edit: The GTX 980Ti is stock. Aha..]

Can see price is added now. Thanks. I promise it was not there originally :-)

Sometimes it isn't there at the start as Shops have not put them online yet. We add a link when we have a online store to link.

Seems AMD is finally truly competing with Nvidia again. They truly delivered this time, even though the 300 series cards are rebrands. Props to AMD! Also really nice review Tom, I enjoyed reading it.

That blackplate is so damn sexy! I almost bought one the second I saw it in the video. It was in my cart and just needed to enter shipping details.. but I held off for Fury:p

AMD need to get those drivers out. They are probably waiting for Fury to release but honestly I think these cards can do much better. They have higher Core Clocks(MSI has the highest with 1100mhz last I checked) and the memory is running at 6000mhz vs the 200 series of 5000mhz. It's a big jump for such a tiny bit in power consumption increase and something drivers could have taken advantage of. Should have mentioned the memory advantage it has over the 290x also tom in the video or the written review but it's whatever:)
I just wish AMD had used 7000mhz memory instead of 6000mhz to really entice people looking for a new card to get the 390x as I personally think that little extra power would make it more consistently beating 980's. But nothing drivers won't fix.

Great review! If I had to buy a 390x, and as much as I don't want red in my rig, I'd take this one above the others I have seen.

This video drove me nuts. The CLICK HERE FOR REVIEW text completely ruins the view of the benchmarks. Maybe keep that silliness off the screen and put it in the info panel below the video? :)

P.S. Does OCing a 980Ti make THAT much difference? One graph has the 980Ti at 22fps, but over DOUBLE that when OCed? I think that was a 4K benchmark, but I couldn't tell because of that silly CLICK HERE FOR REVIEW text covering it up. :D

The performance is good for what the price is. Also, the looks are just as striking as the rest of the MSI Gaming line of GPUs.
This amounts to a lot of performance for your money and it's still just a precurser to the three Fury GPUs that are soon to drop.

I'm impressed.

Nice review Tom, I hate to ask, but are we going to see some overclocking results? I was rather surprised that there weren't any. :)

It still doesn't look right. It is getting half the average FPS @ 4K of both an GTX980Ti OC and a GTX980 OC. Other review sites results don't come anywhere close to that sort of difference.

That being said I found the GTA V benchmark results to be way higher than actual in-game average FPS.

Tom was this test the games in-built benchmark or a live play through of a fixed section? Also was it re-run at least three times and an average taken? It looks like a bad run.

This is just the answer for so many people wanting to go 1440p, looking forwards to 4k in the future. Great work from AMD, MSI and OC3D. Strong par for the haters.

Problem is it still doesn't have the graphical horsepower to actually deal with 4K. Anyone buying one of these cards for 4K in future will find themselves upgrading long before the extra 4GB of VRam becomes really useful.

For 4K to become actually playable (ie. 60FPS+ with decent settings) you'll need at least two of these (or infact any current) cards which means 4K is still a rich mans game, out of the reach of most users.

Two £350 cards is a lot closer to the mark than two £550 cards, and for that reason it's very impressive. By no means is it within reach of the average user but we are now starting to see vaguely sensible solutions.
