I currently have the ASUS PG278Q (X3) and am looking to upgrade to one of the following, but I really cannot decide what to choose. I am a gamer and demand the best performance. I have 2 X EVGA GTX EVGA 980 Ti Kingpins.

ASUS PG348Q
The 34inch has huge real estate
Or
ASUS PG279Q
165Hz refresh rate

Can the community please help me decide?

Many thanks in advance,
David.

Its a difficult to 'help' you decide. I have both and they are very different screens tbh. You need to decide whats best for you. Picture quality are equally as good.

Do you want super wide or a more standard display?

Hi Tim,

I am leaning towards the ultra wide, but the 165Hz is tempting just for the gaming experience.

As you have both models could you give me your opinion?

Thanks for the response.

David.

Who's Tim? Id say if you're gaming go with the 27" you have the gpu grunt to push the refresh. The old adage go big or go home really doesn't apply here, unless your a movie nut or photo shop master.

Oops... Sorry that was meant to be 'Tom!'

I should have checked before sending... Bloody autocorrelation on the phone.

Thanks for the thoughts. I see where your coming from.

Im curious in knowing what gaming would be like on the 34inch screen, so do you have any thoughts on that at all?

I used to have the Acer Predator X34 and it was amazing. Gaming on it was immensive, like a really immense experience :)

I'm currently waiting for the newer Acer Predator X34P myself :)

And also, why would you need 165Hz?... I'd say you only "need" it, if you either are a professional FPS player or are going/planning to become one. And even then it's rather difficult.

Ohh and yeah, Tim!... Thermal interface material, Wraith lad! :p

Both have had stand alone reviews on the front page - everything is in there.

Choosing between them is your job (I couldnt)

I'll add some thoughts on this. If you ignore the whole 165hz aspect. I game on a 27" monitor and sit around that same distance from it while gaming. I personally wouldn't want to go any bigger due to trying to see the whole screen in fasted paced games that require you to be able to see everything going on without having to constantly shift your viewing position.

Ultrawide is great for racing games, FPS games are ok on ultrawide, but I do find it distracting and the constant head movement to use that extra width soon becomes annoying and you find yourself using predominantly that 16:9 section of the screen and ignoring the extreme edges.

As mentioned by Wraith, if you use photo or video editing software, that extra real estate is a god send. Also watching movies on a 21:9 screen is great.

I'm with Tom on the decision making. This is your money, your choice. I have added my experiences with using both. Good luck making the decision, make sure you let us know which one you settle for!

I'm starting to feel the PG279Q is going g to be better suited to my needs... I can see the point of to much viewing real estate and head movements becoming very annoying.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'll let you know what I end up with.

Tom, I've watched and read your reviews many times now and was still no clearer at the time. I suppose, I really need to see them both for myself, but that's hard to do for a consumer.

Thanks to all that have replied below... I'm starting to feel the 27inch would suit my needs.

I'll make a final decision in the next day or two and post my purchase decision.

Thanks fella :)

I've got the PG279Q. I spent many hours deliberating over reviews and vids. I'm very happy with the decision and monitor, especially the colour reproduction. I do get a little light bleed on the left of the screen and I'll watch if this gets worse.

I will also keep an eye out for next year on the 34inch screens with higher refreshes than the current 100hz.

Thanks to all for your help/comments and advice.
