Money, Must spend quick!

Hi all,

I haven't signed on here for ages its seemed, I've just started my first year at uni in cardiff so living away from home, washing my own food , cooking my own clothes is taking its toll.

At the weekend I made it home to see my girlfriend and found out i've come into a bit of money. My mum wants me to buy a laptop but I don't see the point, theres no way I can use it to take notes in lectures etc..

This caught my eye:

http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=338523

Which seems pretty damn good for the money :) I've had a look and the motherboard seems to come in pretty strong on most review googled up.

The other Komplett bundles look pretty decent too.

I've been out of the loop for a while and I know there won't be much performance boost between dual core and quad core considering I've got a lowly single core I think it would be very noticable.

Any input on this would be great!

Is it a good deal ?

Thanks a lot :D

I can vouch for the mobo... Does the job very well for a cheaper board. It has serious Vdroop out of the box when ya try to clock it quite high though.. Can be modded with a pencil to reduce to almost zero. Not so high overclocks and it would be fine.

Cheers, I'll look into that. Your sig answered the other question I had, whether my PSU would do the job.

I've just looked at comparisons between the quad core and the dual core processors. The dual on the one above seems to be just a little less powerful for a little less money..

Any ideas ?

Cheers :)

If your spending the money anyway i'd say go with the quad... The new Q6600s kick the dual cores arses most of the time and as time goes on its gonna be in pretty much everything! The new Q6600s with the G0 stepping clock as well as the dual cores now too.

Sweet thanks a lot man :) Just found your old thread on modding the board which I'll look into.

I was a bit apprehensive before doing it worrying that i'll balls it up but it really wasn't that hard once you find it... just gotta take time and be careful

Fraid im gonna have to warn off that mobo. As soon as my IP35-Pro arrives my 2nd is going back to scan, predicted dead.

Its temperamental at best, the vdroop mod has to be re-done to keep it effective, all the components in the CPU power control circuit are cheap and nasty, the NB HS blows (overheating at STOCK) and its got serious memory compatibility issues.

And the latest bios wouldn't overclock. At all.

And its ugly.

There's just so much better out there.

Are you intent on SLI?

Intel chipsets are the best with core 2s.

XFX and EVGA boards are pretty much just reference boards iirc. They're the same thing basically

No I'm not intreated in going Sli and don't think I ever will.

What is the best intel chipset in the budget range that I'm looking towards?

Well im in a bad mood with asus atm, but the P5K is sposed to be good.

From abit the IP35-E

From DFI the Bloodiron, which i can't find a link for... Its more expensive but would probable be worth it.

All P35 boards.

Thanks again that abit looks nice.

I know its a nooby question but.. do I need to plug the full 8 pins of 12v into the motherboard? My Psu has the 24 pins standard but just a 4 pin 12v connector.

Thanks a lot !

Nope. I have used the 4pin in the past with no issues.

IP35 pro is a sweet mobo and the G0 Q6600 clock nicely, should get 3.6 on 4 cores with no real sweat on a P35 mobo.

Cheers so far :)

Im probably going to be going for the following:

E6750/Q6600.. They're both a pretty massive overkill. So it'll be a coin flip for the winner.

Abit IP35 or IP35-E.. I'm not really sure if theres all that much difference in it?

Miscellaneous SATA DVD Drive.. As I've got 2 IDE Hard drives right now and theres only 1 IDE dongle on the boards.

2 gig Corsair XMS PC6400 Ram

Arctic Freezer 7 Pro.. My A64 version has been excellent, but is this good enough for the dual/quad core system?

Any extra advice would be great :D

Cheers

Just ordered it all now :)

Q6600 GO

IP35 Pro

Corsair Twin2X 6400 , 2 gb

Scythe Infinity/Mugen whateveritscalled

Sharkoon fans

SATA DVD drive

Fingers crossed I won't be back needing help when it doesn't work/fit...

Thanks for the help :D

Yep I'll get some benchies done.

And most probably back to the folding that I've neglected for so long :)

Cheers I can't wait to get it together!
