Mobo/CPU - This Sound OK?

Well I'm starting to put together the pieces for my new build... I've just recently built my first ever build (see in sig) but I'm giving it to my mum as a 50th b'day present...

Basically I need to know if the Asus Maximus Formula and Intel Q6600 will work well together... I understand that the mobo comes with some great software which allows an easy OC function for newbies like myself. I only want to be able to run the CPU @ 3Ghz...

I'll add in the extras into the build once I know that the mobo and CPU are a go......

If you have any other experiences with the Q6600 on different mobos let me know... Good, bad, all opinions are welcome...

Many thanks,

Ryan

Ryan...

Ahh can't believe this hasn't been picked up on..

Yeah those two go together very well indeed. That mobo is very popular mainly due to it performing so well.

Great, so I know that I have a good platform to build up from....

Any suggestions on 1066 RAM? Corsair Dominator, the funky looking OCZ stuff?

I wouldn't personally go for Corsair.. OCZ would do you very well and it doesn't just look good.. It lives up to its looks. Other brands that would be good are Cellshocks, Patriot and ummm Crucial..

I mean this stuck rocks..

Sorry for the cack company link but its the cheapest there at the mo

I'm not too fussed on how much it costs, I'd rather build a more expensive rig now to save spending out on extra in the future if you catch my drift?...

Yeah well the two links you sent are for 2 x 1gb of ram.. Both being great sets of ram but the link to the ReaperXs I sent is for 2 x 2gb at not much lower speeds.. Plus from what I've read they overclock pretty well.

Yea I saw that they were 4gb total... Pretty cheap! Would I see any benifit/difference between 1000mhz and 1066mhz RAM on a Maximus Formula?

I still have next to no idea on OC'ing but I know that the board and CPU I have stated take kindly to it... So when I can actually OC, they will respond well...

Well yeah thats the point.. At the moment you don't know but you want the option when you do :).. You wouldn't notice a difference between 1000mhz and 1066mhz.. And like I say it will overclock above that anyway once you know how. But as you said you would prefer to pay the lil more money and have something that wont want changing for quite some time.

What operating system are you going to be using just out of curiosity?

I'm glad you can see where I'm coming from Bungral... I'm currently running XP Pro 32bit (I know it can only use upto 3.25gb of RAM)...

I'm thinking about going over to Vista Ultimate 64 or from Xp Pro 32 to 64... Apparently Vista doesn't support much/isn't supported in comparasion to XP Pro?

Well at least I'm getting somewhere reards to putting together my second build...

Asus Maximus Formula

Intel Q6600

OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8000C5 1000MHz ReaperX ;)

Still contemplating which case to put it all in...... Antec are great (see sig) and I'm liking the look of the 182....

Case is totally up to the individual really. A lot of people on here go for Lian Li's due to their very high build quality but others prefer the slightly more showy cases.

As for the XP vs Vista support.. Vista support is much better than it was.. On the 32 bit version I'm running I've had no problems at all. If I had the choice between 32 bit or 64 bit though I'd choose the 64 so it could see all the ram. I guess if you happy with XP though then sticking with that wouldn't do any harm what so ever.
