Might have a problem with my graphics card

Yesterday when trying to boot up the screen became all corrupted from the boot screen onwards as seen in the pictures below. I couldn't get to the desktop the screen became too disrupted after the starting windows screen. While getting more pictures the problem fixed itself temporarily, it was the 5th or 6th time I restarted and there was nothing different about what happened. The screen corruption came back on the desktop after about 30 seconds. It then restarted and and the problem returned.

Later on while switching the DVI cables as per EVGA support directions I also cleaned out a bit of dust from the top of the GPU and it started working fine. Later on in the evening though the screen became corrupted again and the system froze on a restart it appeared fine.

I could boot in safe mode but the screen was still corrupted. I tried a system restore but it had no effect.

Have a dual boot and this affects both XP and 7 which are on different hard drives and both are affected by this.

I assume it's a graphics card (seems like artifacting but not sure) or motherboard problem so I'm hoping someone can help diagnose what the problem is and suggest some fix or a way to diagnose the problem properly. I'm happy with resitting the graphics card looking around inside if anyone thinks that's what's needed. It seems like a serious problem that is going to reoccur unless I can find out what the problem is.
