MB Kiling CPUs since power failure

Hi Folks

Need some second opinions from you guys. This is a bit convoluted so make yourself a cup of tea before starting

My gaming rig has run into some problems lately, details of the hardware are in my signature along with links to gallery etc.

A while back my i5 2500k died on me, and I assumed it was an issue with overclocking, it was returned to intel and replaced however Im having issues with DHL actually returning it to my house, that is a different story altogether though...

So in the meantime I was using an i5 2400 that I had spare, everything was fine until I tripped our main fuse box when the garage lights shorted the other day.

When I reset the fuse I realised my pc had been on, and unfortunatley not rigged up to a UPS (poor decision I know).

When I powered back on it couldn't boot to windows, I rebooted again and was stuck in bios, another reboot and a hard reset of the cmos the PC wont post at all and the CPU LED was lit red on the motherboard.

I removed the 2400 and tried it in my media pc and it refused to boot, so I concluded this cps was now dead.

In an attempt to resurrect my main rig for the sake of accessing my documents, I took the i3 from my media pc and tried it in my gaming rig, same problem no post, CPU LED on, but to top it all off it destroyed the i3. I removed it and found it was way too hot. Given that the computer refused to post at all I am now assuming my maximus iv extreme is the culprit, or the PSU perhaps. I'm also worried about my two 7970s but keeping my hopes up that they are ok.

After i lost the i5 all settings in bios have been stock no overclocking (obviously with a non K version i5)

So I'm in a pickle.

I have a dead i5 2400 and a dead i3 xxxx (cant recall which model).

I have a brand new i5 2500K but it is currently doing the rounds in the back of a DHL contract drivers van who cant find my house.

I have enough cash to order a new MB for my gaming rig and a new cpu for my media pc.

But, I am wary of going ahead with this without being able to 100% source what the real problem is here.

My suspicion lies with the motherboard, it is an older b2 revision of the p67 maximus iv extreme that I got for next to nothing, given the SATA issue I only use the ports that have no hard fault, but this board has never seemed 100% stable.

I'm not sure how to proceed though. Should I pick up another RoG motherboard and put the i5 in or should I be concerned that it is the PSU and somehow test it without putting any further hardware at risk?

I can afford to replace whatever is faulty, but I cant afford to brick any more hardware!

HELP GUYS! This gaming rig was built with inheritance I was given from a late family member, so it was my first chance to have such a decent setup that I'd always dreamt of building and now its all gone to shit :( Reality is i'm not wealthy enough to keep messing up now. Trying to stay positive but my PC was/is my only hobby outside of my wife and kids.

Also if I put either of the dead CPUs into the rig and power it up, the dead chip heats up bad within seconds, thats without being able to pass POST, error code 00 and CPU LED lit.

Thanks Tom, appreciate you taking the time to reply, sorry about double post got my two kids dancing next to me and having alternate tantrums while I'm trying to figure out what to do I'm a little scatterbrained :P

I have two AX850's so is there any way of testing if the one in my gaming rig is faulty without putting any more hardware at risk like before i get a new mb? I could get myself a multimeter today if needed. I suppose I could just get a new psu along with the MB to be safe if I had to :/

Cool, well I will stay safe and swap the PSU for the known to be good ax850 and put a new motherboard in my gaming rig then put the new i5 in there which incidentally just got delivered five mins ago... yay!

Get another cheap i3 for the htpc and a more affordable PSU in to replace the ax850 which im going to steal from it.

This way all i need to do is get a new Motherboard, an affordable PSU and an i3 for the htpc which will work out the cheapest option.

Oh and a UPS too, I think I can just squeeze that in but will be SKINT

Let me know if this sounds like a bad idea, I think it might be my only option really. I'll be glad to see the back of this old b2 maximus extreme anyway as I didn't trust it before this happened.

Hang on let me get this straight.

So you tried your i3 in your dead system and it wouldn't boot. So you put your i3 back in your media pc and that doesn't work now either?

My thoughts are that if your CPU got killed by too much power, the mobo would have had to have taken a hit of some kind, as the power travels via the mobo to the CPU, so that must be damaged now too; which explains why the i3 doesn't work in that system.

If the i3 is in fact completely dead (it doesn't work in the media pc) then your PSU must have also taken a big enough hit to be damaged too.

By the way a surge protector and decent PSU should be enough to prevent this sort of thing from happening. A UPS isn't really needed.

Thanks SPS, yep you got it all right there.

So im deffo gonna replace PSU and motherboard.

Going to put the i5 2500K that just arrived in the htpc for now so the kids can watch TV again, its been chaos.

Hopefully there's no problems with the htpc, fingers crossed. **EDIT** HTPC is back with new 2500k in it until i fix up the gaming rig.

I really really hope my two 7970's didnt get damaged, if they have i'm gonna have to admit defeat, literally no chance of replacing them in a hurry :/
annoyingly I had my pc on a surge protected socket but it appears that had already blown previously as I dont think the protection LED was lit on it for a while... /facepalm

gotta roll with the punches I guess :(

So i'm looking for a decent replacement for the motherboard just now...

Am i wasting my time just getting a new IV Extreme p67 b3 edition for ~£200 or should I be looking at a different chipset.

I have stuck with asus for a while after having bother with gigabyte stuff back in socket 775 days, so I'm not clued up with other manufacturers either.

budget is about £400

Need a MB for my gaming rig that will take all the components that I already have. preferably fit with the black red colour schemeif possible.

A cheap i3 for the htpc and a cheap but decent PSU for the htpc.

Anyone have any recommendations or advice?
