Making Orange Livebox faster?

Hey guys, I have an Orange Livebox and I'm stuck with it until the end of the year. And I'm wandering if I can make it faster by getting a different modem/router. Currently I can only get 200kb/s by using the Livebox they sent to us, and our line should be able to hold upto 2.5MB/s and I believe it's the Livebox that is making our internet slow. =/ And having 200kb/s is getting kinda annoying.

So again would a different modem/router make my internet faster?

the livebox *shouldnt* make much or any difference to the speed you download at (unless its very faulty).

it mainly depends on

a) where you are downloading from (basically what are they uploading to you in terms of speed)

your provider (orange are certainly one of the worst for over subscribing and throttling/traffic shaping)

c) your location in terms of distance from the exchange, quality of line and amount of subscribers.

run a speed test at speedtest.net

post up your results. there should be less throttling about now

Well whenever I try a speedtest it always says I should be getting 1.5MB/s DL speed, but whenever I download anything be it a torrent or a steam game max speed I get is 300kb/s.

Here's the result from speedtest.net that I just did:

So surly I should be getting nearer 1MB/s at least

1.8Mb works out to around 0.25MB due to bit to byte conversion of 8 bits to 1 byte, with my 50Mb download i get around 5.5-6.5MB max via any source depending on the time of day and if the source can put it through to me.

Basically the download speed your getting is about right for the speed test results, your guess on getting atleast 1MB was a big guess.

Nearly allways download speeds on speed tests and broadband adverts ect are in Megabits (Mb) aka "Meg" which are you can get 8 of to a single Megabyte (MB)

1.8 Mb or 1800 Kb = 230KB or 0.23MB

Mb = Megabit

Kb = Kilobit

MB = Megabyte

KB = Kilobyte

Basically 8 Bits = 1 Byte
