Low Powered F@H Rig

Hey guys! I was just wondering what would be the best custom built F@H rig for £500. Its just for CPU folding so graphics card isn't that big of a requirement.

just wondered what would get the best PPD.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

2nd hand 1366 i7 920/930/950 + mobo/ram can be had pretty cheap nowadays (200-250 or so total if you keep an eye out) and the cpu alone at 3.8-4 should pull in around 20k ppd, not sure if the pointing system has changed on the big adv WU's as i havent been folding/keeping tabs on it for a while.

Would be super easy to drop in a gtx 460 or 2 for another 10-13k give or take per card at a later date.

An i7-950 @ 4.0ghz will give you 25-28k ppd, should be possible to find cpu+decent mobo for 200-250£. 2nd hand X58 sabertooth sell for less than 100£ here in denmark, you should be able to find one in u.k. area.Only drawback is,you would need a nh-d14 or similar.

At the moment the best 'bang for the buck' is definitly not in the GPU PPD, it's in the Multi CPU rigs. High cost to start off with but PPD/Watt is alot better. Also if you've got 12 cores (reported by OS) or more you can get the 'new' big-bigadv WU's, which get you loads of PPD.

in terms of a 500 pound rig, the best bang for the buck is an 2600K (capable of regular -bigadv) or any higher performing LGA1366 CPU (the 6c/12t variants) if you could find one.

a GPU gets some nice PPD aswell however running it is more expensive than just a CPU. Do be aware that you will need some good cooling.

Ow, just a small disclaimer... the Pande group is constantly working on this project and the points that are awarded. In the future there might be a QRB (Quick Return Bonus) for the GPU's aswell, which may cause them to get a better PPD than large multi CPU systems. When and if this will happen is still unclear though.

May I ask why you are Folding? Are you doing it just to help others? Or is there something I'm missing about f@h?

Yeah it is a great competition of such to cure all these diseases. now days F@H teams are rivalries.

What about processors like AMD 12 cores?

They are great for folding, but so is the pricetag also.1 new amd opteron 6172 cost 700£ .2 or 4 cpu`s are needed for good setup.

I remember aria had opteron 8 and 10 cores both for under £200. They vanished off the site though
