Low power usage

I was looking to know this might be impossible but can you build a PC with Will idle in the 25 - 30 Watt Range and will still have enough power to run a program like blue Iris which is a CCTV sofware
 
From the research I've done, blue Iris needs a bit of grunt. It depends on how many cameras you have and if you set up any areas for motion detection.

I'd be looking at a i5-6500 or newer as a minimum spec. I think you need to approach this from a usability POV rather than trying to fit it to a specific power range.

^^^This is spot on.

Ive built silly low power systems before but when you think a hard drive might take around 30% of the power you want to use it gets incredibly difficult.
 
I have blue Irish currently running on a laptop I will get the processor name and I can start working from there it is only using about 60% of that processor so that will give me a starting point and I have a 1 terabyte SSD I not sure if SSD is use less power than mechanical hard drives but that is the drive I'm going to be using

It is a 7 camera setup

Currently my complete setup take 145w that is the goal to beat

145W - That sounds expensive to run 24/7. I'm looking to do this at some point in the future, and so did quite a bit of research...

After reading numerous threads, for what seemed like hours on end, the recommendation was to see if you could get a HP EliteDesk G2 800 i5 6500 on ebay for around £300, and use that as your base build.

Keep us informed, I'd like to know how you get on.
 
Yes you're completely correct any posts or forms I have read about topical indicate that they are the pcs to look for , I am currently running Intel core i7 2670qm and I think it being a 2011 model I'm hoping we can get equal performance with less power usage in another CPU, and then I can add a poe pci card and hopefully cut down on the cost of having to run separate Poe injectors per camera and a switch/hub as well hopefully reducing the cost of the electric
 
Just a quick update I have done some testing with other hardware all without graphics cards all with ssds and the best I can manage with blue Iris was about 95 watt during the day and 105w during the night therefore I have decided to go with the NVR a friend lent me one to try out and it will use 35 Watts of power in daytime and 44w at night-time this is with a reolink nvr and 5 reolink cameras , these watt figures were all from my own testing and my own personal experience so your mileage may vary.
 
Wow, that's quite a difference in power usage, I'm surprised that its that heavy on the juice. In your testing, did you make sure that QuickSync was running and that you enabled direct to disc & hardware acceleration?

Also the resolution & frame rates of the cameras have quite a significant effect.
 
Yes I did do the hardware acceleration and made sure it was all lining up I also visit a form called IPcamtalk I believe it was and I started a thread about this topic the guys on that form for claiming they could get your computer to run at some said 48w to 70w what's during the day and plus 10w at night for IR and the camera, the biggest factor for me in all this was the cost they were talking about building buying our finding certain systems that ranged anywhere from £300 all the way of the five and £600 by the time you pick out switches poe injectors or a poe swfitchs which any one of these things were adding cost and the electricity bill for each item , the reason why I went for a reolink nvr was because 1 it's all self contained to the recorder I bought was £215 off eBay and it uses less wattage than the computers options that they were talking about the really only downside I could find for using an nvr is you're going to be tied into reolink cameras


Very true i run all the camera at 25 fps and 2k res
