Looking for a new laptop

Afternoon all,

I need your help picking a new laptop, I'm probably not looking to spend more than the £500 mark, but a few things I'm looking for include a Full HD panel, fast enough CPU/GPU for watching HD movies/videos on, possibly a Blu-ray drive then to go along with these.

It's only really for Internet browsing, and Microsoft Office/Excel but I will use more power with HD, as I do tend to watch a lot of it on my current Asus UL30A Notebook, my trusty baby is starting to show it's age a bit now though so I'm going to start searching.

Any thoughts, any preferences on laptops, I've seen a Lenovo fan around here somewhere, but have no idea on how much they cost or anything.

Cheers.

lenovo fan? where? ;P Kinda true I guess, can't hate on a company that makes laptops that never die on me.

Full HD panel might be a bit of an issue. I found a 720p res lenovo with an i5 and gt740. I've also found a dell with a 1440p screen for £538 but it wouldn't be able to do much more.

Haha it's you! I couldn't remember who it was. :P

The Lenovo in the link you sent is definitely one I'm going to look into tonight, for a start it looks nice, which is always a good start with laptops. Can't view the Dell but I don't often hear any good about them. I've seen some nice Asus laptops in the past but they were the £700 price range which is to steep really for what I'd use it for.

I think someone on this forum has one, except it has a 640 or something. Lenovo stuff is pretty nicely made in general but because of it usually is a little bit heavier. Screens are usually really good as well, even on the goofy crap.

I'd say look at Dell, Scan 3XS and Sony for alternatives if it doesn't float your boat. HP are terrible unless they cost 800+ and Toshiba are pretty much the same. Sony are so hit and miss its hard to recommend them too :I.

Haven't forgotten about this btw, just not had much time to sit down and look. I'm going to start now and hopefully if I find a good one and do some research I'll pick one up in the next six weeks so I can play on it whilst I'm off work for a couple of weeks. :)

If you can stretch your budget and don't mind buying second hand or from ebay, have a look at the Lenovo Helix.

Ignore the prices on Lenovo's site, they're radio rental. Look on ebay and you'll find a 2nd hand one for £635 - i5-3337U 4GB 180GB SSD, 11.6" 1920x1080 display, Wacom digistiser. Or new for £650 with a smaller 128GB SSD, just make sure it's the model with the stylus as it doesn't say.

No affiliation with those sellers, just items I was watching.

I was all set to get one of these until I discovered the Surface Pro 3.

I'll have a look Mysterae but the price is a bit more than I want to spend. :\ That Lenovo from the second post is my top choice atm but I have seen an Asus with like a brushed ali facia round the keyboard, and a sexy black lid. I think it was £550, I'll find it and post it shortly.

Have a look also at some MSI laptops some of my mates have bought them in the past and they are nearly bullet proof.

Look awesome but fall to pieces within a year. Thats the experience I've had with them from members of staff at my work.

Really? Asus have always been a high quality in my opinion. Are you sure you're not confusing them with Acer? :p

No, trust me I'm not. Really not impressed with Asus laptops, especially considering these are high end ultrabooks. We started off with 6 now we have 2. Two of them had screen issues, one had a dodgy keyboard and the other one had a bad battery. The 2 that are left I presume don't get used much. Never tried the ROG gaming ones tbh. They've been replaced by a mixture of HP (eww) and Lenovos which haven't had any issues.
After all the issues with the ultrabooks, my GPU's various quality control problems and their lazy job with the 290/290x I don't count myself as a huge fan of them at this point in time :P.
Atleast their motherboards are still excellent.

I might spend more now so I can do a bit of gaming on the laptop.

If they have gaming grade components do they last as long? Just with them being compact and getting hot.

Barnsly, are the new lenovos like your yoga pro as tough as the old ones ? (e.g T61, X61S)

Feels very well built tbh but they don't feel the same as our old tanks :(. Not in a bad way tbh but still :/. Atleast they still sell thinkpads that look roughly the same :D. Probably because my yoga pro is more consumer than traditional thinkpad.

Oh that Lenovo you posted Barnsley has gone up to 689. :(

Pretty sure they'll have a new gen of that laptop coming out soon. I'll see if I can find a replacement for you though.

-edit- this one is quite different in specs (i3 and a GT 820) however it has a 1080p screen. Lenovo Z50.
