Life on the bleeding edge

I was going to post this as a reply on the sapphire thread about kemps x1900, but decided i might get hammered by the new OT rules i've just familiarised myself with :)

Anyway:

I've always been a bit of a wuss when it comes to upgrading. I tend to wait until all the fuss has died down then buy second hand top of the range components from 2-3 years ago. The result is a cheap, stable system that's had all the bugs patched out of it built from high quality components and chugging along reasonably fast, but in a rather boring fashion.

It occured to me the other day that owning a bleeding edge machine might not actually cost all that much.

If i were to say, buy an x1900 for £450 or whatever they cost today, and sell it shortly after the next gen arrived, how much do you reckon i'd actually lose? There are enough dopey ebayers out there to get back most of the cost i reckon.

So although there's a hefty initial outlay, is it actually much more expensive to keep a top notch machine top notch then it is to keep a reasonable machine reasonable? It's obviously going to be a bit more but just how much intrigues me.

I don't know, i've never tried. Have you?

I do this almost every refresh mate.

Had a 6800GT...7800GTX 256 came out and I decided I wanted one. I RMA'd the GT for a dumbass reason and paid £100 extra for the GTX. Nice

7800gtx 512mb came out so I sold the old 256 and put an extra £100 towards the 512mb (which was £500)

X1900XT-X came out so I sold the GTX 512mb for £460 and bought an X1900XT-X for £420. This meant I got back £40

Not bad eh ;)

So how long a period was that over? I'm not too hot on gfx card release dates, especially as they often don't actually coincide with when you can buy them in the UK.

Damn! It seemed so quick. Time flies when ur having fun eh?

hmm so £20 - £26 a month.

or £5-£6 a week

Or about what i spend on the bus to work..

looking at it that way it almost seems sensible to drop half a grand on a graphics card..

Ye I know bad isn't it!

But I enjoy it and really its not that much cash in perspective...I just have a beer or two less a week.....only 100 a week for me
