So I was just wandering what type of monitors you guys use. I know that plasma isn't all that common as a computer monitor, but I do know of a few people that plug a Plasma TV in since it gives better picture quality and contrast.

For sitting close (monitor) probably LCD/LED

Plasma is nice for TVs

LED backlit screens seem to have weird problems, also some people think they are too bright to be used for monitors ( argument is that to get vibrant colours you need to have them set too bright to sit in front of and if u set the brightness down colours are washed out

)

Some people have reported backlight bleed on the edges with LED also (unless you enable dynamic contrast which causes the screen to flicker when u get white text on black etc).

Most aspects of LED backlit screens should be identical to lcd screens tho given they use the same panels?

What advantages do you get from LED backlit screens?

Power usage

Better Blacks/whites?? (only when in dynamic contrast mode which causes flicker and often puts screen into full contrast and brightness causing it to be too bright when up close)

Cheaper to manufacture? (there are reportedly CCFLs which are 60% cheaper than LEDs)

OLED ftw?

OLED id nice but its only on phones mate so far.

LED is very smart and blurays look alot more defined, some of the big brands have some nice sets

plasma sucks ass IMO

The definition on a LED backlit screen and a LCD is the same as the panel is the same.

Mine is fine but I want to know why plasma sucks ass.

And your mate having two go on him doesn't mean they suck ass, it just means he is incredibly unlucky

he got his cash back and in the end went for a 40" LED its a very very pretty set (weighs as much as a piece of paper) but damn he paid through the teeth for it

they seem dimmer and fuzzy to me when side by side to LCD even so LED

yes one point when LCD could not get good black levels and contrast plasma ruled, but not anymore its old tech

so it sucks ASS imo nowadays anyway

You must have been looking at some god awful plasmas !

Mine is so bright it near on burns your retinas. We did this deliberately due to the silly horror stories people spread around (hint). However after nearly two years of use I had to lower the brightness and contrast as there was no fade at all.

So the dimmer part? I cry BS. The fuzzy part? Well, they do tend to offer a tiny bit of fuzz. However, when you consider that when an LCD gets a low res low bandwidth signal and displays lots of lovely blocks all over the horridly washed out screen? then the fuzz works like an anti alias.

And then of course there's price. My 42" Sammy plasma was £420. At that time a 42" LCD was £600 and compared to mine looked like crap. Infact, so good is mine that when my uncle came over and looked at it he almost sold his 50" Sony Bravia LCD as he couldn't get over how lovely and rich the colours were. Unlike his, which cost him a grand.

So yeah, you must have looked at either some terrible plasmas or the people using them just had no idea how to set them up properly.

The *only* downside to plasma is that they use more power. However, they are cheaper so over a five year ownership (and yes I did work it all out) they work out slightly less than a comparitive LCD.

And before you say it screen burn is ancient history. All of the new ones either won't burn or carry screensavers.

A lot of enthusiasts would rather have plasma because of the fact the colour reproduction is better than anything else. (lots of references to this online)

which one looks better?

Why Plasma?

If you’re serious about a BIG home theater, plasma is pretty much the way to go with a flat screen television. Plasmas offer a number of advantages, including:

Better Blacks- When a plasma pixel is off, there’s no light at all (LCDs have a backlight)- this produces a darker, more realistic black. This leads to…

Better Contrast- The pictures looks sharper and more lifelike.

Better Pixel Response Time- If you’re watching the big game, you don’t need to see blur or artifacts, plasmas are great at showing fast action.

Colors- LCDs are good, they can show millions of colors. Plasmas are better, they can show BILLIONS!!.

Why Not Plasma?

You need to match the tech to the requirement. Looking for a car or kitchen TV? That’s going to be LCD because plasma isn’t made in those smaller sizes yet. There’s also a couple of circumstances where LCD performs better:

Really bright rooms. The backlight allows a slightly better picture under bright lights/glare

Mounting constraints- LCDs are lighter, a large plasma really does require professional installation if you mount it on/in a wall.

High altitude performance- LCDs aren’t affected by altitude where plasma performance can show some degradation.

The whole thing with "LED backlit screens seem sharper" is also a rubbish marketing ploy.

As said above the actual panels used are LCD panels so why would having a different way of backlight produce differences in sharpness or colour ?????

I do think LCD have a sharper picture. However it's simply too sharp. Any flaws with the incoming media AT ALL and you get lovely blocks all over the screen due to the way it works (in dots).

Plasma are a weeeeeeny bit on the fuzzy side but this actually helps the picture to look softer, warmer, and IMO better.

I had a 62" DLP projection in the USA and it was about the same as an LCD. No surprise I let the ex take it when we seperated.

Still, I suppose it comes down to taste really

i use a Samsung SyncMaster P2770. its the best LCD monitor i can find. i am still waiting for a 27" LED, i can only find 24" and smaller and starting again at 32" and bigger. and when i have my PS3 hooked up to via Monster Cable, the picture is freaken un belivable.

The smaller ones are fine TBH. Obviously because they are smaller so are the pixels. I have never seen any of the issues related to LCD on either of my computer monitors. It's when you make them big that you also make the pixels bigger and then they become prone to showing up blockiness.

Obviously the way around that is to go HD, but not all of us want it or want to spend what it costs. It wouldn't be so bad if I was living in a city but around here Sky take the urine because they know that they have no competition.

Hi mate been waiting for an opportunity to make my first post, looks like i've found it. I'm also currently in the market for a 27" LED monitor and have found one that from my research (different reviews and customer feedback) is one of the best 27" panels on the market, its the;

Asus VE278Q

http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=SqSPAYIsfecjo9GX

2 milisecond response time and an above average contrast ratio make it a great gaming monitor, and the excellent color reproduction and sheer desktop real-estate make it an awesome monitor for general use and movies.

hope this helps mate.
