Leaked benchmarks list the RX Vega 56 as a GTX 1070 killer

Well let's be honest they've had plenty of time to prepare. I hope those figures are correct, because they look decent.

I hope this is true. I'm planning on getting the RX Vega⁵⁶ anyway but this would be some nice icing on the cake when I was expecting at or just below GTX 1070 performance.

Are you expecting Nvidia to lower the price on 1070s? That would be nice.

Yes. Definitely. They have been charging full whack for going on a year? now. They are small dies, cheap AF to make, so they can easily drop the prices. You may find the cheapest cards won't come with the Founders cooler, because it isn't cheap to make (see also - the plastic tat AMD call a cooler on their Vega high end cards) but that shouldn't matter too much.

The 1080 has already dropped to £450. The big Vega is set to cost £500+

FWIW, I've been seeing some decent price drops here in Canuckistan. Not sure if they're just sales, but I saw some 1070s on sale for over $100CDN off, 1080TI's for less than $900CDN, etc.

if this review is using DX12 the Vega 56 gets put kinda close to the gtx 1080 in regards to performance at 1440p for BF1 for a lot less.

Didn't you insist that Vega was only ever a 1070 competitor? If this rumour is true, Vega is not only a 1070 beater, but it's so at the lower end of Vega.

I'd like to see benches of The Division at max settings, Wildlands, Gears of War 4 etc...

Also I'd like to know how exactly these games were benched.

I said expect 1070 performance. And I was spot on. One of them is pretty much the same sort of performance as a 1070. That was done calculating with the specs AMD handed out forever ago. Well, the rumoured specs any way.

I reckon then the full fat card will be just passed 1080 performance.

Probably. AGF - don't get too excited man these benchmarks are totally cherry picked.

Let's see how it performs in everything, not just what it's good at, because that's all AMD have shown thus far.

I know that. I mentioned the same thing when I posted about it in the Quick News thread, that those games favour AMD. Adding to that, the source of TweakTown is not a creditable one.

Well, I guess I misinterpreted you then. Because I remember you saying something in the vein of, 'Vega was only supposed to compete against the 1070.'

On the one hand, you were right. Vega is competing against the 1070. On the other hand, you were wrong, because full Vega is competing against the 1080, and possibly the 1080Ti (with huge caveats).

Edit: Regarding the point about "cherrypicking", I find that kind of curious. How many games that are benchmarked favour AMD now? 10? 12? More? Less? How many are regularly benchmarked and played from that list? Quite a few. So maybe this whole concept of 'Ignore those benchmarks because they're clearly cherrypicked to favour AMD' is actually a bit of a fallacy since those cherrypicked games are actually quite popular and are growing in number as each quarter passes. Soon those games will be the norm. Why discount them just because they favour AMD? Should we discount GTA V because it favours Nvidia? No one does so why discount Hitman or BF1, two games that are very relevant?

The point is, when they only show games that favor AMD, it does not show the real thing. To tell the performance you need a proper review with games favoring both sides, running both cards with the same settings.
So there is nothing wrong with showing the games, they just cannot stand alone.

There are certain games where the Fury X beats the 980ti and 1070. I could easily write a review where it wins in everything. Just like I could have written a review of the 8320 where it beats the 2500k in everything (WinZip, Handbrake, Cinebench etc) however back in reality it loses in almost every test.

As such I am merely pointing out that Vega could be a lot slower than it is being made to look.

How many times now has someone got all excited and mentioned the 1080ti? It won't even come close IMO. Two weeks ago and before we got the FE reviews and Vega was pretty crap. Now the bloody hype train is off again FFS.

I guess if I had to explain it.. Expectations. If you have them you will *always* end up disappointed. If you are pessimistic and expect jack s**t you will get a nice surprise. I am just incredibly skeptical. Which is good apparently. Apparently people that expect nothing and are quite miserable and pessimistic are incredibly hard to con. I read a study about rip offs a while back and they reckon that's why the Nigerians target the Americans. Because they are much nicer, happier and thus less suspicious etc.

So yeah, I will stick where I am. If Vega comes as a surprise? it will be a nice one. Does that make sense?
