Laptop connected to LCD monitor = video files blank in media player

So i have my laptop connected to an LCD monitor and i am using it as the sole display but have hit a problem with that.

I can use the monitor just like you normally would if it was connected to a desktop PC except when i launch a video file say in VLC it will show up just fine on the laptop and i can see the video but on my monitor all i get is blank screen in VLC where the video should be. I've also tried Media player classic and WMP 11 but nothing works.

I have a Nvidia Quadro NVS 110M graphics chip on my laptop and have the nvidia drivers installed but don't know where to look to change any setting if i need to?

Got this issue fixed by trying various option using the function keys and a button my laptop which eventually set it up to only output the display via the VGA port if connected and ignore the laptops own screen.
