Just thought I would share this with all, I am using Waterchill water cooling system on my Opteron 165 @ 2.6 GHz, well the temperatures under full load used to be about 39c using prime 95 with large FFTs on both cores, I thought this temperatures was not to bad but today I have taken of the water block and thought I would lap it in I was amassed to find that the water block was not even and now after lapping it in for several hours and refitted it the temperatures have come down to 35c under full load using prime 95 with Large FFTs on both cores, so that’s an amazing 4c drop in temperature just by spending a bit of time lapping the waterblock in and of course this can now only get better as I have got to burn it in again so it could get even lower.
I thought I would share this with you all as this can be done on any heat sink not just water blocks so if I were you I would remove the heat sink and get some 600, 1200, 2000, grit wet and dry and sand down any imperfections, then use some good metal polish and Finnish of by buffing up to take out any small scratches, make sure you use Tim cleaner after and re-apply AS5 and refit, I think you will find what a difference this has made.
