Can you change one language games to English?

I bought a game online but I didn't read properly so the game is in Russian, Can I change it by downloading a English language?

I can't remember what site, but the cd key is for assassin's creed 4 russian.. I can get the language file for English but I want to know if it will mess the game up in a sense of playing online and keeping the game legit?
