The KHRONOS group has reveal the Vulkan API, the groups successor to OpenGL, it will work on all GPUs, all OS's unlike competitors like Mantle, DirectX and Metal.

That logo looks like something from the 80s.

Yet I still prefer it over many I see today. Simple is best! :)

Why hasn't Spock been photo shopped into this yet?

anyway, Should we thank AMD and their mantle for paving the way for the changes to driver overhead we will soon see in the likes of DX and GLNext aka Vulcan?

Someone had to start somewhere I suppose in order to get other manufacturers to jump in on Graphics evolution.

we also need to remember that AMD said that they gave the KHRONOS group full access to the mantle source code.

That could have sped up development a lot.

I give full credit to AMD with this. I really do believe that they mean their company value of "openness".

All I can hope is that future APIs are developed with the same key goal in mind and that is for manufacturers to collaborate together and bring us to a completely new level in advancement.

Yeah of course, AMD did everything right to try and set the standard/progress R&D in this area. Even dropping Mantle is a great move to focus on the common APIs to deliver the same performance.

I have updated the article to put more detail on the API's SPIR-V language frontend, which will be a very interesting feature of Vulcan in the future.

It is the same as the language front end in OpenCL 2.1, which could lead to some interesting very things.

This Smells very AMD.....

You can smell text?! :p

Reason why its similar to AMD is because of the language it's running and by using Mantle as a large source probably encouraged them to continue development of Mantle(with a twist obviously) instead of starting over with a new language and source. Mantle has played a very large role, as we all can agree, and it's evident mainly in this over DX12 due to the sheer similarities. The fact all those companies are aiding in creating Vulkan as seen in the article, really gets me hyped for the future. Along with being a reason Mantle was disbanded.

Now the true test comes down to DX12 vs Vulkan. Wonder how its gonna work with PC/Console/Phone with PCs running Ubutunu/Windows/SteamOS/Mac(not PC but you know what i mean) and then using PS4 since it's not DX12 compatible and etc. Sure SPS has more knowledge on all this so i won't bother trying to compare:p
