Just too much?!?

Hey all,

I'll admit up front that I'm 'all the gear - no idea'... or only a little idea anyway!

Just got a machine built as below -

Corsair Carbide 500R (upper drive cage removed as only using x1 mechanical and x1 SSD)
i7-3770K (@ 3.9GHz)
H100 in the roof
16GB DDR3/1866mhz RAM
Asus Sabertooth Intel Z77
2x GeForce GTX 690 4GB

I've got the original fans (x2) as intakes up front, SHARKOON Eagle SE Ultra Slient Modular Fans (x2) as side intakes and the same again on the rad pulling air from inside the case and out and finally one SHARKOON on the rear as an INTAKE (I was advised this would be better than having it as the usual exhaust).

So the problem is I'm running pretty hot; playing FarCry 3 (2560x1440, ultra/high) for 25mins got my GPU's up to 84'c (and noisy!) and my cores were getting kinda warm too. The case was felling pretty toasty also. Any advice on the best way to get a better, cooler, airflow? Also, the 690's exhaust from both ends of the card so will this be messing up the flow of air from front to top and should I swap around the rear fan to exhaust?

Any suggestions for better fans also appreciated!!! (Swap back to a 200 on the side?).

OK, think that just about covers it. Thank you in advance for holding my hand!

All I see are intake fans on your specs, forcing all the air into the case and not allowing any airflow out the case which is keeping all the hot air in: no wonder your temps are going up.

General rule is have the highest up fans (i.e roof and your back on) running as exhausts and the lower down ones as your intakes. Keep the air flowing cleanly and this will help a lot.

Would also expect to see some pretty toasty temps running anything at 1440p but the above should help a bit.

pictures of your layout would be helpful.

OE fans in the front (meh) with or without drive cages?
upper rear fan could/should be exhaust. what setting is the H100? perf, balanced, quiet?

as said, you have a positive pressure and the case is having to vent natually
not allowing the heatness to exhaust quick enough.

any overclocking?

Maybe invest in some better fans?
Make sure cables aren't in the way.

If you have 2x 690s, in gaming you won't actually see any benefit from using the second card. Should have come here before buying it and we'd have told you that ;)

I'd personally try and return the second card if you can, or try and resell it, as it will do absolutely nothing for performance, but will block airflow to the top card.

Do you have vsync enabled? That should at least stop the cards from going massively over what they need to.

Thanks v much for the pointers guys!

The top fans are exhausting as they're drawing the air out of the case through the radiator (should I rotate them to pull cool air in??), but I'll turn round the rear fan to be another exhaust.

I've got the upper cage out, lower housing an SSD and HDD.

What are your thoughts on swapping in a 200mm fan on the side? And any recommendations on good case fans and fans for the H100 (its on performance)?

Thanks for the vsync reminder too!

As your said, your case feels warm, this is due to the heat not leaving quickly enough...
Spin the back fan round, and make sure the 690s have breathing room between them (You've not sandwiched them together have you..?)

Keep the radiator exhausting out and as for fans for it, SP120s (QE or PE, take your pick) are probably the way to go.

If your GPUs are throwing a lot of heat to the side it is worth considering making they fans exhaust as well

if ur gonna use that rear fan as intake ur better off with air cooled only system, the purpose of it would be to create positive pressure in the case, but with your radiator exhausting air this will not be happening, so you'll want to turn that rear fan to exhaust and think about getting higher flow front intake fans to keep the air moving. .

could also make your rad push pull so they ram air out of the pc, and is your pc out in the open or tucked away cos that will make a hug differance
