I've never felt so helpless/useless

Lo lads

I just wanted to share an experience that I've just been through, and one that I hope none of you have to endure. Yesterday my youngest son Dylan (he's 5) was rushed to our local children's hospital emergency room after being pulled off the playground monkey bars by another child at lunchtime yesterday. Dylan subsequently suffered a Colles fracture, or more accurately, a double Colles fracture because both the Radius and Ulna bones in the arm were broken halfway between the elbow and wrist (see top image below). Looking at his arm when deformed in that way almost made me ill and the missus burst into tears.

Anyway after speaking to the doctor who was on duty and after a series of X-rays we were told that Dylan was going to have to have surgery and manipulation to help repair the breaks in his little arm. It is extremely hard to try and explain what is going to happen, and why the need for general anaesthetic to a 5 yo lol. Furthermore; I can honestly say that I felt absolutely hopeless/useless at the moment that they wheeled him into theatre. You try and prepare your kids for many of the obstacles or temptations that they may encounter during their formative years, but yet you can't take their pain and just make it disappear.

Dylan was allowed to come home today which I'm really stoked about, but we do have to watch the swelling present in his hand which can cause further complications. Sorry for sounding like a blithering idiot but I needed to vent, and we're all friends here.:)

Sorry to hear about your son's accident. From one older fart to a younger one, I know what you're going through, my daughter snapped her ankle landing ON a trampoline and now we have a grand-daughter to keep an eye on.

Here's hoping the worst that comes of the break is a special skill for spin bowling to torment us like Shane did (now that would be BAD news)

O yeah, been to emergency rooms with them a good few times, none of them mine tho - uncle to quite a few.

They get into all kinds of scrapes, and are pretty robust pieces of kit.

He looks happy enough :D

Well you've surely handled it well PV, and anyone in their right mind would be a worried mess. The worst is over and now you just have to keep an eye on him, and he'll be back to normal soon enough. Cheers to you for being a great caring father!

Best of wishes to Dylan from all the OC3D community, and hats off to you. Hope Flick takes it alright, which means you have to take care of Dylan and keep her calm, well done.

Aw that sucks man, hope the little ones alright now. One of those things you cant protect against without depriving your child of any fun so dont beat yourself up about it. Accidents happen and he looks happy enough lol

Bless him....good to see you have the little fella back at home mate. If it makes it easier to deal with I had a very similar break when I was a young un...radius and ulna...my wrist looked more like a knee joint!!

I hope he's OK and that the swelling is kept at bay...give him a thumbs up from me and mine!!

Awwh, hope you are all feeling a little better now PV.

I can totally understand the feelings everyone is going through and hope the little'un gets better soon. :)

sorry to hear that PV, but hopefully he will have some cool scars to show girls when he is a bit older :)

send my support to the rest of the family bud x

That sucks man. I hope Dylan gets better real quick and I hope you and your missus feel better. Don't worry, he'll get better soon and he'll be stronger than ever!

:D

poor lil guy :(

glad to see him smiling after that

i'm with mrapoc, i wouldnt be either

ah well, i hope he recovers :)

Hope he will be fine (which I am sure he will) humans are more resilient than we let on, especially younger ones. No matter how much you try to protect them they also learn well from mistakes. although I don't think Dylan made one in this case.

I also understand the helplessness you are on about and the fact that there is very little you can do to take the pain away. I think cuddles and reassurance is all that you have and a nice warm smile telling them it will be fine. Luckily most kids understand trust and have it totally when it comes to parents and they fully believe what they say.

Let us know when he is back to his old self ( probably is already ).

Hope PV-Junior makes a speedy recovery. I know it's not nice to deal with a child undergoing surgery, but you dealt with it well.

All the best.

Sorry to hear about your son, PV. It must have been an awful experience, but as the others said, he seems to be a happy chap. Hope he recovers soon. :)

I remember one time as a kid I ran a rusty wire through my leg, but it wasn't that bad, cause I loved all the extra attention. :P
