Hi, i have noticed recently, that occasionaly my computer just starts to have a quite sort of beep in a pattern, and today, it started, i went for dinner, and cam back, shaked the mouse to turn the screen on and it came on, then windows crashed, and the PC restarted telling me to insert boot device etc... so i turned my PC off and on again and it worked fine, some desktop shortcuts/icons/files where in the wrong place but nothing else had changed?
it was a sound repeating like a zzt sound , and if i listen carefully, i could here something spin up slightly faster just before the zzt.
has anyone got any ideas about what this could be. or how to fix it, and theories or advice or has anyone else had the same problem?
cheers for the help.

I once had this too in an old rig and the problem was that my video card had died. Check it to see if there are any popped caps or other forms of visual damage?

well, im using integrated graphics, and turned the clock speed up, but will eventually get a graphics card, as long as it still works.

how do i stress test? what program would you suggest thats free.
i can overclock cpu's fine and im good with that, but im not good on graphics carrds.
so can you give me a quick run down on it

you overclocked on chip graphics? try setting that back to stock.

for testing GPUs you can use the many benchmarks about (cat zilla ect) or a stress test you can use furmark (maybe others)

it will be about 1 FPS though, i tried bnechmarking just cause 2 at 1080p on the lowest graphics settings and it was about 12 or less, cause its sandy bridge intergrated :P i havent got the money right ow for the graphics card, but ok, il get some stress test software, also, in artifacting, what exactly am i looking for, what does it look like?

ok, i think its screwed, my OS wont boot into windows 8 properly, it does the loading thing, then it comes up with a blue screen saying, something along the lines of, you PC ran into a problem and needs to restart, and it keeps restarting, and then it goes into automatic repair, which hasnt worked so far, and this is because i tried clearing the bios by rememoving the battery, and it doesnt work, the battery didnt reset the bios, so i did an f5 to set to optimized defults and it doesnt work now, HEELELLPPP :'(
what do i do. once i get the OS fixed i will move onto the beeping

Doesn't sound like a gpu problem to me. You can usually clear the bios by shorting a jumper on the motherboard, some even have a convenient button you can press. Is your ram set up according to either the xmp profile or spd profile? If not set them to it.

If you can, see if you can download memtest and boot it from a usb stick or a cd. You can use this to test you ram at its present settings to determine if it is stable or not. 5 passes is the norm.

i refreshed windows 8, and it has helped, it has stopped now, but got a new problem of, i have 3 hard drives and an ssd, i unplugged them all apart from the ssd (for boot) for when i did the refresh which deleted alot of files, and i had to plug back in my optical drive to do this refresh, but now its done, i plugged everything back in and two of the hard drives dont work, these are the main drive, that are quite old, but they are plugged in, i did reset the bios, could it have something to do with that? help thanks

Unfortunately Windows 8 is veeeery sensitive to any change. For example once i shrank the partition it was on using a 3rd party partition manager and After it was done and rebooted my machine, i had the same thing, boot then sad smiley face.

It would help tremendously, if we could see some actual information on the blue screen, though i do not think at all, that the reason for all of this was your overclocked IGP. When i overclocked an IGP Windows started having bluescreens referring to atikmpag.sys, the occurrence of which increased over time. I never got a beep once.

Right click your Computer icon, choose manage, and there choose disk management. Maybe they just haven't got any drive letter assigned.

Maybe your boot drive is faulty, is it a hard disk drive? because if it's spinning badly there could be a problem reading it - maybe explains the spinning noise, and the "zzt" bleeping could be coming from an alarm speaker on the motherboard, indicating a system error, but I don't know much about that

ok, the beeping is coming from the speaker you plug into the motherboard, internally, and is it a coincidence that both drives stoped working at the same time, after not even being moved, just unplugged?

also, there are no blue screens when i oveclocked, iv set the IGP back to auto, and the blue screen thing is fixed, its just the beeping and the hard drive problem.

ok, i just tried something, um... well i stopped the beeping... and the way i did it was by unplugging all the hard drives but the SSD which is my boot drive, and i don't have any more beeping, so im going to leave it on and try and max the igpu loads and all that, and see if it beeps, but if it doesn't beep, what is the problem then?

ok, i found that one of the drives was causing the beeping, the beeeping before was slower, but today it went 4 times faster, and when i tried adding drives, when i added one of them, the beeping started so i assume that that is the drive that doesnt work so i have removed it, does anyone know if there is a way to get the data off of it?
