Issues with FDI Ultra SLI-D

Hi Chaps,

The last few days I have been having some strange issues with my motherboard. It started off that I removed my 2x1Gb sticks of Geil Value from it (which were at the time passing MemTest fine) to replace them with some suspected fault RAM, In the end 3 sticks were found to be faulty and one stick was found to be broken.

When I put the sticks in one at a time, only one reported errors in memtest, however when I put 2 sticks in together, memtest always reported a few failures per pass, the same thing has happened with the latest set I got (after I RMA'd the last) but this new set pass 20+ loops in a 4 stick combo on my P3 machine.

Also, since playing around memtesting the RAM, I have encountered a new problem. Each time I shut the machine down, I then have to take the CMOS battery out and turn off the mains for 10-20 seconds before I can get the machine to reboot, otherwise it will hang at the 'Lanparty nF4' splash screen before post.

As I'm sure you can imagine, this is incredibly annoying, I'm hoping and praying that someone here will know a fix!

For the record:

1.) I have changed the BIOS to several different versions (now using the one Tony from OCZ suggests)

2.) I have cleared the CMOS, several times

3.) I have stuck to 'optimized defaults'

None of the above seems to make any difference

Please help!

Try a generic -1 BIOS (623 work for me) axer mate.

Also optimised defaults are not always great settings for 1GB stix.

Plus drop in your full system specs here so I can have a think about ur issue - I am sure we can help.

Hey Mav, i've tried a few bio's (from the DFI website) Tonys one was the last I threw on it.

At the moment I have 2x 512Mb sticks in it (Geil Plat, PC 3500 in the orange slots - If i put RAM in the yellow spots I just get beeps at start up)

Anyway, current system spec:

A64 3700 SD

DFI Ultra SLI-D

1Gb GeiL Plat PC3500 / 2Gb Geil Value PC 3200

PCI-E 6800U

Enermax 500w PSU

Am running at stock currently as I was just trying to memtest 'value' RAM.

I have found another way which some times allows me to boot, this is holding down insert whilst powering the system, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t!

My main worry is why memtest is reporting RAM as fault when there is more than on stick present :S

Axer, I might be able to help on a few things here:

The beeping with 2 sticks of ram in (after cmos reset) could be down to the 'cold start' issue related to the DFI mobo - Bios 618 onwards cures that and you should be able to start up in yellow or orange slots with one or two sticks of ram.

How is the CPU cooled - if its a mach this could just be an early sign of condensation occuring and should be checked out.

Do you know for certain (by using a different rig for instance) that the ram you are using is working correctly? Also, while checking ram out in different rig, use a64 tweaker and make a note of the ram settings being used - then enter those settings into the BIOS manually.

Not sure if these are solutions - but they are things that I have tried to help me identify problems in the past - hope they help mate.

Using air cooler atm, and my other rig is a intel jobby, the beeping seems to happen regardless of what Bios im using although it never used to do it :S

Most strange AXER - have to admit you got me stumped, normally I'd say here it's the board, but have been proven wrong about that once before so I am reluctant to give up.

Maybe someone here living close to you can try the RAM out for ya?

ive been having a similar problem with the dfi 855gme mgf mobo when i use

2x 512 kingston bh5 i just get a long beep tried flashing to the latest bios with no hope im now stuck with some generic pc3200 with loose timings and its working fine

I'll get my Geil Value (2x1gig sticks) back in the next couple of days, I'll see how it goes with those :(
