Ok so a couple of days ago i started thinking of upgrading the rig just a tad, but am not to sure if its worth the money. So im looking for some info/forum subs experience. I am thinking of upgrading my cpu to a 3570k and my pc is mainly for gaming. Is the upgrade worth my money or not.
My system spec:
Asus z68v-lx (bought with intent to be able to upgrade in the future)
i5 2310 (was max for my budget at the time)
8gb corsair ram
xfx 6850 (maybe this is where i should be spending my money???....7870 ish??)
cx500w psu

Ty for all and any suggestions.

It's not really worth it for gaming, the performance increase in games will be marginal and it would be better to upgrade the graphics card instead. As you said, a HD7870 would probably be a better choice, giving a ~70% improvement in gaming performance.

It is worth upgrading, but not if you can afford one part once 2 years. If your budget is tight you should focus on what you need the most... in your case, maybe, the graphics card.

the latter gaming titles might start to look to CPU for more instruction, but the grafx are
more demanding and are heavily relied upon with a better GPU. once the FPS crests, then
possibly a CPU upgrade. but for now, GPU (7870) would be an easier noticable upgrade.

Definitely go with a faster GPU. That i5 you have in there now is more than capable for gaming but that 6850 is going to be struggling a little with max settings on some of the newer and more demanding games out now like Far Cry 3, Hitman, BF3 and Crysis 3 looks to be a GPU hog too.

A 7870 would definitely be a nice upgrade but if you could add a little more to it and stretch to a 7950, that would be a lot better and theyre not that much more than a 7870.

I would also agree to upgrade the GPU. Although I would go to a 7950 as apposed to going to the 7870.

It should have enough headroom with that card to allow you to then upgrade other parts of the computer before you have to think about touching the GPU.

that i5 you have is a great chip and it can last a long time from now for gaming.upgrade the GPU.the 7870 is awesome for 1080p. i donno what budget u got but the hd 7950 is a good deal and a nice futureproof.get one with aftermarket cooler from msi, gigabyte, asus.not xfx

I'm going to jump in the same boat as everybody above me and recommend that you upgrade your GPU. Both the 7870 and the 7950 gives great performance for their cost, just make sure to buy one with an aftermarket cooler like s3ns3 said.

What games you play ?

If you don't play the up2d8 fps games, the 6850 plays everything else pretty well - perhaps look at a monitor upgrade ?

... need more info to speculate further.

Upgrading the cpu, as the guys say, you'll notice practically nothing gaming-wize. With little info, the gpu upgrade is the obvious choice.

SSD to replace your harddrive ? (if you haven't one already)

.. all down to the type of gaming you do I think.

Sry for not replying sooner, but i have been super busy this month. I really like the recommendations that you guys made.

@Macleod Yes i have noticed that the 7950 is not that much more than the 7870 in Germany atleast, not where i am, so it is definately an option, but i am unsure if it is worth it for a 1920x1080 resolution.

@Ironhand You have a valid point and a 7950 would indeed give me more head room for the future.

@Rastalovich Tbh i fail to see the benefit of an ssd apart from having one for my OS i do not think i would benefit much from it apart from game loading time. As for game titles i play all kinds from fps to mmo and rts alike on my 22' lg ips 1920x1080.

Ok so to conclude which 7870/7950 would you guys recommend and is my psu sufficient to power one or the other (corsair cx500 34A 12v rail).

SSDs are so much faster than a standard HDD. If the ONLY use of your PC is playing games like MMOs then you may not see much difference. FPS on the other hand, you'll notice a lot of difference as load screens will take less than half the amount of time to load.
Obviously you get the huge benefits in the OS itself too.

I'd say get one of those first, and even if that meant you could only upgrade to a 7850 it'd be worth it IMO.

@jamesriley94 I have been looking around and found a samsung 840 250gb for 164 euros which is not a bad bargain, but one thing that is not great about it is the write speed, but since i would be going from a hdd to a ssd i doubt i would even notice the low speed.

The write speeds are absolutely fine. They're listed for max read and writes, which windows will never get up to that kind of speed. It's the 4K speeds you need to look
at, and in those, most of the modern SSDs are pretty similar.

If you're just using it for windows and a couple of games, do you need one that big though? I'm happy enough with my 128GB Crucial M4... Has windows and a 6 games on, and still has a fair amount of space left. You can always use steam's backup and restore feature, and bckup the games to your HDD. Then installing them back onto the SSD takes around 6 minutes usually for me.
