Is this upgrade worth it?

I've not compared them tbh. With the games I tested that suffer from poor drive performance the faster the drive the faster the loads. But yes, from what I recall drives are usually made or broken on the 4k RWs.

So you advise me to buy a full length PCIe 16x to M.2 adapter and do the BIOS Mod? Can I buy the cheapest I can find on ebay, meaning, are they all the same?

Cheers

Do you want to boot from it? or just use it for DATA?

I would love to run Windows 10 from it and have my steam library on it. So, yeah, run everything from it and just use my old 120Gb Vertex if I run out of space for games and apps (I have 1.5TB of HHD drives for the rest). I would love things to be snappier, basically since I am alsways running out of space with my small 120Gb old sata SSD.
But if you tell me that I wont notice much performance gains when compared to just buy a much cheaper 500Gb SATA Samsung 850 Evo drive I will do that since it will save me money and a lot of headaches. ;)

Cheers

OK well from what I hear NVME drives are faster than SATA III drives for booting. As I say, not tried it myself but I know that my RAIDR was always faster (timed) than any of my other SSDs for booting. Only a few seconds, and not really something I would have noticed unless I timed it but NVME drives at reads are three times faster than my Asus RAIDR so I guess you would definitely see a marked difference coming from an old drive !

The booting part is the only part I am not sure about yet. Some say some cards are not bootable but can't offer me any information.

I am not sure if the boot bios is on the NVME stick or the sled yet. I would imagine it's on the stick (the drive) but yeah, not 100% sure. I was going to get one this month but because the RAIDR was a simple swap out it's kept the wolves at bay for a while :D

If I go that route I will get that and try it first. I have heard they get a bit warm, so liked the idea that that one comes with a heatsink.

Edit.

Having read the ad for it it does say this -

(Note: Due to computer BIOS limitation, not all motherboards support start function, please consult your motherboard vendor supporting details)

So I would imagine it is bootable, but as you know you need to mod your bios to make it viewable :)

Thanks a lot for all your help. :) I have decided that to save some money and possible problems I think I will go with a Sata Samsung 850 Evo SSD. When I upgrade my Mobo, CPU and RAM (an expensive upgrade that I dont find much necessary at least for now) I will also buy a NVMe, maybe 4K random speed has improved by that time and prices have come down as well.

Two last questions, if you don't mind:
My old Vertex 3 120gb SSD had slow write speed, even when compared to other SSD from 2011. Do you believe I will notice a noticeable performance improvement when I replace windows and everything else to the new Samsung 850 Evo I am going to buy? And should I opt for the 250Gb or the 500Gb (regarding speed performance)?

Cheers

You would notice a difference if you performed the same actions on both. Real world difference? dunno man.

The Samsungs are supposed to be really good though so it's still a nice upgrade. I was hoping personally that by now drive sizes would be lower in price but it seems they have held on due to this memory shortage (memory prices have gone stupid too).

Either way an SSD is always an upgrade really. I've always moved mine between computers :)

Oh yeah, I would want the bigger one too. Some games now are pushing 70gb, so you don't get much on a 240gb especially if you put Windows on it too.

I just ordered a Sata Samsung 850 Evo 500Gb.
Thanks for all your help, guys! Cheers
