Is this a good computer

Hello
I'm not someone who knows everything about a computer and it's performance, so I figured I could ask it here. First the list of the things I was going to buy:

Monitor: BenQ 22'' GL2250 LED
Disk: 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm SATA 6Gbit/s
GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 660Ti 2048MB DirectCUII
CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K 3.4 GHz
PSU: Corsair CX 600W 80+ Bronze
DDR3: Corsair 8GB (2x4096MB) CL9 1600Mhz VENGEANCE LP
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V LX
Chassis: Fractal Design Define R4 Black, Window

So to my questions
1a) Is this a good computer for gaming?
b) Can it run Battlefild 3 on Ultra?
2 If i get this, should i overclock it?

Appreciate any answer. Thanks!

a) Yes
b) According to Anandtech Bench, the regular 660 can run BF3 at decent frames (55 average)
c) It's up to you.

I was wondering why you're not going for the latest platform i.e. Haswell?

Yes, Yes, Yes - but you may want to get a better CPU cooler.

Maybe consider a better motherboard too if you want to overclock a little more. MSI G45 maybe, or GD65 if you can spend a bit more.

Thanks for helping me. And since I'll get a 60Hz monitor, 55average is good. And i dont get Haswell since I dont feel like Ican afford it, and I got other things to spent my money on, haha :)

Fair enough dude. The 55 average is for a standard 660, so your frame rate will be higher.

Which cooler would you suggest?

And if I get the MSI gaming g45, would it be easy to overclock?
PS. What does overclcok really do, and is it worth it? DS

Overclocking is increasing the clock speed of the processor. In doing it, it generates more heat. I'll also say, it wears away the chip quicker too, although as long as you don't go too harsh on it, it'll bring it down from lasting 12 years to 11 or long times like that anyway, so it won't really make any difference in that respect.

It's definitely worth doing - just free performance. On modern CPUs, you can quite easily get 15-20% increase in performance, maybe even more from overclocking - so why wouldn't you?

Cooling depends on the budget. I'd say try to get a Noctua NH-D14 if you can.

55 avg means that you most likely have drops even down to 40.
any framerate lower than 60 you can clearly feel, it messes with your precision. kills the fluidity of the game.

I have to agree on this, Normally I play MW3 and it is 70-80 frames, however in one specific spot on one map, my frames drop to 30.....needless to say, I avoid that part of the map like the plague.

Going as far as saying it is unplayable.....maybe a bit much... Its definately playable, its just that you will notice the drop.

As far as the build goes...........
I'd be tempted to get a HD 7950 instead, but I like the Bang for Buck that Radeon Offer.
With the PSU, opt for the Modular version... Corsair CX600M to improve on Airflow by not using the cables you don't need

Overclocking, not on the stock cooler no. Pick up a decent aftermarket cooler and you should be set.

For me personally, anything above 30 is smooth. If there are harsh drops in frame rates, then the fluidity will be affected, but otherwise it is fine.

actually in any version of idtech anything below 125 fps is a pain in the arse :P

no way mate. i can barely handle that stuff in LA Noire, but in FPS games it drives me mad. the difference is like day and night. i don't even need to monitor my framerate to feel the difference between 55 and 60+ fps.

Okay, I've made som changes, and here is the setup now.

Monitor: BenQ 22'' GL2250 LED
CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K 3.4 GHz (Haswell)
GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 660 2048MB DirectCUII
PSU: Corsair CX 600W 80+ Bronze
DDR3: Corsair 8GB (2x4096MB) CL9 1600Mhz VENGEANCE LP RED
Motherboard: MSI Z77A-G45 GAMING ATX
Disc: 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm SATA 6Gbit/s
Cooler: Noctua NH-D14
Chassis: Fractal Design Define R4 Black, Window

What do you think about this setup?

Well, I guess were different then or you experience mad frame drops on a regular basis.

I dare you to start any fps of your choice and cap it at 60 fps. Then after an hour you cap it at 30. I swear you will feel a massive difference. your aim will feel shaky, lots of tearing, the smoothness is gone.
/edit
Yes i am a bit more bitchy about it than others, that is because i play fps games every day and most of them on a competitive level. Those games demand perfect premises. And every quake player knows how sacred the 125 is, no frame less per second.

He has an opinion of what is acceptable based on his experiences, you have an opinion of what is acceptable based on your experiences.

When it comes to what fps is acceptable there is no definitive answer as it ranges from person to person, however, I would say that for most people anything over 30fps is going to be playable and anything over 40fps will be completely smooth.

Edit : Sorry for not answering your question T0MT0M, that rig would be perfectly fine for gaming, it would certainly run BF3 at high fps. Personally I would recommend you overclock as it is basically free performance. One bit of advice, get an SSD :P

I've not tried that, but with fraps enabled, when frame rates consistently stay above 30, I don't have any problems. When I get massive frame drops (below 20 fps), that is when the perceived smoothness of the game suffers. If the minimum frame rates are really bad an average fps of 50+ will mean nothing.

We're not all the same dude and this is going off-topic slightly, so we can agree to disagree.

EDIT: Seamus is spot on

Anyway...... lol

Back on topic :)

In yellow, are not compatible.....the z77 board is a 1155 socket, Haswell is 1150.

Take a look at the Z87X-D3H (which is the Haswell version of mine)
