Ive put together something on pc part picker for a mate and as he is Polish and they get paid not to good its all he can stretch too ... £375.
I know its not much but he doesn't need a beast and will probably only play bf4 on it. I am going to lend him my msi lightning 580 gtx too.
Anyway here is the list

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i3-4170 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor (£88.20 @ Aria PC)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (£24.95 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£30.97 @ Scan.co.uk)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£51.01 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£34.92 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 580 1.5GB Video Card
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case (£49.19 @ Aria PC)
Power Supply: Corsair CX 600W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (£57.98 @ Amazon UK)
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer (£9.36 @ CCL Computers)
Total: £346.58

What I was mostly concerned about was the cpu and mobo. I'm not sure if that's the best choice for both and was looking for suggestions.
He was thinking about in i3 4170 and i mentioned the Intel G2358 anniversary but he has never overclocked and as I'm not there with him he wont be able to do it.
There's also the possibility of an AMD combo.
Any chance of some input on this please?

Im not 100% sure, but i think he can get fx-6300/6350 for same price as that i3 or for a few pounds more, but he cant get as cheap mobo as that one.
I would pick 6350 with a 970 mobo, remove optical drive, and get 1866MHz RAM.
All in all should be at his budget limit.
Yea, just checked on amazon, 6300 is the same price as that i3, m5a97 rev 2.0 is like £61 on amazon.co.uk
But if he isnt into overclocking, then he can get higher clocked 6350 for ~£93 , which is a bit more than £10 over, so removing an optical drive, he is in his budget limit, no one uses OD nowadays anyway, all is arround cloud and usbs, especially since usb 3.0

Thank you for both of your replies. I will take a look tomorrow. Too many brewskis after watching England play :D

£350 budget without a video card? i think this is a little more balanced (h81 mobos usually need bios updates to run haswell refresh chips)

Only one issue, he cant overclock it, neither of those 3 are K models. His buddy never did it, but he can easly OC an fx chip. And with non K ur basicly stuck at that clock. Also 4690k should be 5-10 pounds more expensive than the non K model, so you can basicly put either:
I5-4690k with*GA-Z97P-D3 ATX
Or
Fx-6350 with m5a97 rev 2.0
Or if he never wishes to try out the joy of overclocking whoch will later help him in games a bit, go with 4690 (non K) with*GA-Z97P-D3 ATX

Id personally go with 4690k or fx-6350, even though he might not overclock now, he will prpbably do it later on, or he will be curious to try it :)
Allong with CPU and Mobo, add all other stuff from Lynx's post, and he will fit at 375 budget either way, good luck :)

unfortunately there are one or two things wrong with Lynx's list as he hasent acounted for the added in Gtx580 so the psu is too low power and the Gtx580 whont fit in to a Fractal Design Core 1000 (the 580 is enormous)

Thank you for both of your suggestions. Unfortunately Joca he can't afford the i5 that you mentioned but the AMD looks a good solid suggestion.
Cooper, that's a nice set up and most likely the combo I will tell him to go for reason being if he wants to upgrade to a different i5 later he can with that same board.
There was no cpu cooler in that build I have just noticed so ill add the hyper to it, it should fit. I keep seeing people suggesting not to get an optical disc drive. How do I install the operating system then? Pen drive? How do I get the OS onto a pen drive then?
I was worried I wasn't going to get any help and that I would buy a pile of junk for him for a while there! I just hope that there will be no issue with the 580 gtx and that he could run bf4 on high settings. I googled the i5 4460 and it seems to be able to handle bf4 on Ultra settings with a 970 so here's hoping.
Again, cheers!

For a locked cpu the stock unit is good and surprisingly quiet upgraded cooling units are only realy needed for overclocking.

The i5 4460 is a very good chip for budget gaming so much so i dont see any reason to add a ageing AMD chip anylonger anless you realy have no budget at all.
