I've had the error message a couple of times, looks like the SQL server is close to max_clients.

Either lots of people visiting, or many search engine robots at the same time, which can cause it.

was slow for me before aswell, seems to be normal now slow again for me now, very random, slow then not slow, slow then not slow

Slow here as well, sometimes I get timed out and get a 504 error, it's been happening for the last few days for me. Same thing happened last year for a while, although it's not as bad as it was last year.
