Hey guys newbie here so go easy on me
smile.gif

my current rig

Intel I5 2500 @ 4.0ghz( on all 4 cores)>>kingston 8gig ddr3>> MSI-P67A-GD55>>silverstone ST75EF 750>>cm690IIadv(window) xfx 6950 xfire

tried overclocking my vid cards ... but it just hangs in the middle of 3dmark11 loops or heaven... i heard if the cards don't like the clocks normally get a bsod ..

that got me thinking is my 750w silverstone sufficient for my rig? do i need to go for 850?

to get them to oc i had to jump thru hoops and finally got directed to the registry file editing ... it solved my issue and i could go past standard oc...

don't wanna spend the extra on a new psu if my current one is fine ... would love a new case hence wanna be doubly sure before i rule out a weak psu on my end ...

any help lads?

You could calculate you wattage with something like thisand you will see.

that explains it ... its fine with a 6950 crossfire but for 6970 it says i need 922w!!! well thats what i need then ...

in your experience if a gpu cant handle clocks will you get a bsod or will system become unresponsive?

What do you have 6950 or 6970? When it can’t handle clocks it usually gets unresponsive, artifacts in games it can BSOD.

Never seen a Silverstone PSU before. Are they good?

It should be fine, mate, as long as the PSU isn't old. These PSU calculators are all BS if you ask me. +1 for a bad clock IMO. If you want to be on the safe side of things, though, pick up a Corsair TX-750 and trust me, you'll be more than happy. I'm using one in my current rig with a 950 and 2 460s and it's not even breaking a sweat. The best thing about them is that they are high quality but they're quite a bargain right now.

The strider series are good. I would test both cards separately first to find the max OC for each. Then I would put them in CF but remember you will most probably need to lower the clocks in CF for some 10-20Mhz to run them stable.

ill try that this weekend ... and report back..

Your system will draw max 700W in highest pick from the wall, that's mean with 85% efficient PSU will draw ~ 600W from the Power Supply.Don't use power calculators, they rubbish

All you need is good 850W PSU, Silverstone they are not so bad PSUs but not great.
