Is my i7 too hot???

Hi

my idle temps are around 46c core 1 & 42c cores 2 to 3 That is with speedstep on @ 1603ghz draing 43.8 watts using coretemp to monitor temps and am using a nexus FLC 3000 Fan.

settings are currently all stock and untouched using rampage II X58

Thought this seemed a little warm given the speed and speedstep???

and now notice that @ 3.1ghz (1.3500v)idles @ 53c (hottest core) and maxes out @94c almost straight away whene stress testing (prime95)!!!!!! I stopped test straight away, but this is surely way way too hot what have I done wrong???

another thing I have just touched the heat sink ant it doesn't feel anywhere near as hot as coretemp says its not even as hot as the motherboard heatsinks, does this mean anything??? am I pishing too much voltage or something???

you might want to try remounting the heatsink... 94c is terrible for any cpu let alone a 45nm i7 :o if the heatsink isnt hot at those temps you're having contact issues without a doubt! Seriously though, get that cooling off and check the mounting ASAP unless you fancy frying your new toy!

dropped back to stock settings again gonna remount heat sink tommow night. running around 45c so should be ok for now right, only surfing net

p,s whats the best way of applying the compound on these CPU's small dot in the middle if dot how big, or is a line best like on the Core 2 Quad, if Line wich orientation should it be???

I put a drop in the middle and then spreaded it with a credit card... Idle temps hover between 25 and 30C, load around 60 with 1.3v in bios, 1.264v load in cpu-z.

The only program I know of that really reads the i7 temps correctly is RealTemp. Try and see if the temps are different. You could also check your BIOS 'health monitor' for idle temps.

Oh and btw: when overclocking, do not forget to increase VTT. This voltage is for the L3 cache and the memory controller. Increasing it from 1.1 to 1.35 (max safe according to intel specs) allowed me to raise my 3.5gHz clock to 3.7gHz and lower the vCore from 1.35 to 1.30 in BIOS.

tried 4 times reseating the fan and heat sink an the best I can get is 47/43/42/43:mad: tried it spreaded thin line an dot method seems the line method works best.

so have concluded it must mean that my nexus FLC 3000 is a C&AP cooler!!!

So gonna try the Asus Trition 81 would like to have tried the noctua NH U12P cooler but it's a little to tall for my cae and will most likely require modding in the form of dremmal, wich I'd rather avoid if poss.

Are the asus fans namely the triton 81 any good the don't seem to be cheap @ £50!!! how does it fair up against the noctua, I here they are about the best???

I'd say go for the Noctua bud, it is a much better cooler IMO. It looks more capable, if you're unsure, google is your friend ;)

yes but can't fine anything on the triton seems it's fairly new out, would prefer the noctua but if the difference is all but 1 or 2C I''ll live with it to save the modding of my case don't wanna hack a new case...just yet LOL

The asus does look a good capable cooler...

compared to my nexus .....what was I thinking just 4 heatpipes and a 92mm fan looking at it I gues half the air force gets lost out the sides etc:(

seems they asus has more heat pipes and bigger surface area and dual fans, should be miles better, surely?

I'd wait for reviews on the Asus, since I've never heard an Asus cooler to be outstanding or even remarkable.

Is there any kind of 1366 mount for the scythe ninja or similar?

couldn't wait was driving me mad so gone with the asus gotta be alot better than what I have, just hope I an squeeze it in my case.
