Is it worth to pay $100 more for the E8600 (3.30ghz) than the E8500 (3.16ghz)? Will you notice a performance difference while playing games?

Maybe an extra FPS, not worth it IMO. Buy the E8500 and overclock it to E8600 or above

FPS stands for Frames Per Second - the amount of images displayed per second on your monitor. Although you will not get any more than the Hz that is set up, max a TFT can give is 75 I think, but the more you have the smoother your game play is

If you have more fps than the default monitors Hz, tearing effect comes into play and makes your image look very bad, that is the reason they have v-sync in game settings.

I don't think it's really worth it to be honest,most E8400 even will do 3.6ghz without even touching voltage and can be had for about 164-170$ USD

You may not feel any difference with those two but just go for E8500 and overclock it, awesome cpu in my opinion. I got one on the mATX bord but it so easy to reach 4Ghz.
