Is 1366 still way to go?

Since new year is coming and i though of changing the platform. Since i didnt rob a bank (at least not in real life :P ) soo ive got budget of around 200 quid for CPU+Mobo. I've been looking for some time on i7 920 or something higher (if price will be ok). Of course the OC is the way to go, but all due to air cooling not extreme. But straight to the fact - is 1366 still a good platform to go with even if its "dead"?

Thanks in advance.

Running on Phenom II X4 840. Still im selling it soon to my nephew for little cash since he has my rig from waaaay back which is on Athlon 4000+ soo that why im asking.

If you picked up a good combo at a dirt cheap price then hell yes.
For gaming they still hold up ok.
If only you were in Australia I have a spare motherboard, i7 950 & 6gb ram that I could pass on to you.
Overclocking wise they were a real joy to have fun with. In fact I'd go so far as to say its the most fun socket to play with.
Just things like sata3, usb3 you may miss out on depending on the board.

1366 is soon to be 3 generations behind. Yes performance would be better than what you've got now, but it's still outdated compared to the Intel alternatives ie - Sandy and Ivybridge today.

I'd try and save up a bit more and get an MSI Z77a-G45 and a 3570k, or maybe look at 2500ks if you're really struggling on a budget. You can probably pick up a G45 and second hand 2500k for your £200 budget

@Deejeta
Unfortunetly not even near Australia, but thx for trying. The important point for my interest in 1366 was how most 920 can get to 4.0 or over it. Once ive even got a good deal for i7 for 2011 socket, but still the cost of the mobo was too high and had to refuse (now i think about it i need to borrow a gun :P )

@james
Im not saying that ill be not thinking about updating the rig in the next half of the 2013, but for the time eg. i7 920 should eat my Phenom II X4 840 (without L3 cache). Im thinking about 1366 to make it in the future some kind of home server. In long range plans ill be aiming for 2011 or Haswell (if they will show some big improvements), but that will be after ill find a job outside my country since its getting worse here.

For that, I'd still say you'd be better with a second hand 2500k and comparable motherboard. You can overclock 2500ks to over 4ghz easily enough and it will perform better than a 920.
Just try and look for some deals.

I'd grab a AMD CPU before 1366..

^ for OP info 4ghz is nothing on sandy 4.5-5ghz is simple enough depending on what you consider stable.

Yeah, im looking for some time for some sweet deals, but 2500k stand for about £180. I can add £20. Ill sharp my search after the Xmas due to many peeps will be selling their old parts. Still i wont hope for miracle thats why im asking about the 1366.

Note - I give the budget/prices in pounds beacuse its easier to understand than my currency that i use.

@grassman
I've never taken AMD cpu's from plans, but i prefer to get on Intel.

Don't be surprised if your not impressed with the performance gain from your current cpu... :lol:

Sandy is worth the jump not 1366 :S

Yeah, but i need to sniff out a good deal to get it in that budget. Love this kind of challenges though thats why im looking for all alternatives. As for the performance apart for games that are on DX9 or are older (i dont play new fancy titles beacuse they bore me) i use Photoshop soo dont need some kind of super cpu with ultra equipped mobo. I dont use USB3 nor do i need some other fancy techs - i can wait those 10-20 secs longer for game to load plus i prefer how game is playable than the graphics.

What I'm saying is I don't see the point in you jumping from your current CPU to 1366 if it's not sandy don't bother

I agree really.
If you saved up more and got a 2500k/3570k etc, then you'll have perfectly fine performance and you wont even need to upgrade to Haswell in the future. As you said, wait till after Christmas, maybe try and save up a little more - but I think 1366 is too out dated now to even consider upgrading to.
