IPS or 120hz monitor?

Hey guys, Hmm at the moment I'm leaning to IPS monitors. Sure its 60hz but I havent seen blurr yet on my old 60hz piece of crap monitor.
And I have a 720p monitor and jumping to an 1600p for example would be jawdropping.
I mean I'm the kind of guy who played ps3 and played red dead redemption for the first time. The first thing I said is wow this game looks so real, jaw dropping graphics, everything looks real and to this day I still love the game no matter what people say.
So I think I'm graphically sensitive.
I mean the graph quality, or is it just because the game is running on a larger screen but similar quality.
I don't have much blurr at the moment on my 60hz screen so I can hardly say how a 120hz would improve smoothness and stuff.
Is there a big difference between 1080/1200p and 1600p?
And does someone own a 120hz monitor and an ips? What do you guys prefer?

A 2560 x 1600 resolution monitor has essentially twice as many pixels as a monitor that is 1920 x 1080/1200. Why not just go for 1920 x 1080/1200. Imo that is the ideal resolution for gaming, anything larger would only benefit other tasks like photo/video editing :)

Hmm how about playing battlefield and such on 2560x1600? Wouldn't that just be awesome? So I should stick with a 1920x1200 screen then? wont there be a big difference in how nice a game will look? Remember I do like real like graphics like I was amazed by red dead redemption on ps3 for the first time. I was litterly like wow what a game..
In any case is the difference big between 1200p and 1600? Is the difference big also between 60 and 120 fps in case of smoothness and stuff?

I've not seen BF3 on a 2560 x 1600 screen personally. I don't think there will be a massive difference though tbh. On my 1920 x 1200 IPS monitor BF3 looks amazing and I couldn't be happier with how good it looks.

Well with a 120hz monitor you would need a pretty powerful graphics card/cards to push 100+ fps in the more demanding games, so I don't think it would really be worth your time if you don't have the processing power to maintain the high fps required to fully utilize the monitors refresh rate.

Yeah see I'm still in this ridiculous dillema of the 120 or ips...
Look heres a vid to 1600p gameplay:

I'm just lost you know... IPS looks cool but your capped at 60 fps, I wouldn't have problem going SLI GPU to get 120 fps if needed. I just want top quality price is not an issue.
But I'd also hate if my game stutters like skyrim sometimes does on my pc... on lowest possible settings...
My pc can handle 800x600 without shutting down on its own... I have a 720p 60 hz monitor. So yeah I'm crap and its an upgrade no matter how I look at it. Still don't know if its a huge difference in smoothness at 120 fps.

Oh another video of just monstreous graphics..

Its only 1080p too. If you play this on 1600p what does it add? Little details that one might not even see or notice or what would IPS add here? If you look good on this video all is so bright, awesome and lightshafts and all that so how does IPS top it ?

No one can recommend me a 120hz panel here?

Well if that's what you really want then wait for ASUS VG278HE; it's 144 hz. Personally I think this one shows the most promise of all the 120Hz panels I've looked at. It's not out yet though.

Cannot wait that long I need the monitor soon, need to order today...
I would take IPS panels over a 120hz but theres always the issue of input lag and such, unless theres no good ips panel I'll stick with a 120hz one.
What I'm looking for in ips is 27inch max, not 30, 24 inch is good too. 1440 or 1600p screens and no or not much input lag or response time.

U2412M or PA248Q. They're both IPS, 24" and not too expensive since they are kinda like step-down models from their older counterparts (U2410 and PA246Q). Oh, and they both came out this year so, in terms of input lag, there should not be any problems with either.

+1, the monitors mentioned above will be more than fine for the fast paced games. You don't need to worry about input lag and ghosting with the newer IPS monitors :)

What does everyone think about the Dell ultrasharp u2711? I'm liking it but not many reviews on this product, also apparently it has 18ms input lag, is this a reason I should shy away from this monitor? What do you guys think?

No, I don't think so. I know a couple of members on Bit-tech who are using the U2711 for games like BF3 without a hitch so I wouldn't be too worried about the 18ms response time. The U2410 has a similar response time and I haven't run into any issues and I'm sure other Dell IPS monitor owners will say the same :)

18ms is something to be worried about.

I highly doubt it actually has that though. My google search just showed up saying it was 6ms. I'm sure it wont be 18ms though, as I think people would struggle to game is it was

That's the grey to grey response time, so when a wider colour range is used the response time will be higher.

If you read the review on tftcentral, the reviewer states the responsiveness as pleasing, but at times there is a noticeable ghosting effect. The effect is less clear on the 24" Dell U2410, so that might be a better option for the OP or any one of the other 24" IPS monitors.
