IPS or 120hz monitor?

this is the great thing about custom builds. trying to compare one product to another with no real idea what you actually need, but at the same time knowing that either one will be a massive upgrade. you are lost in a sea of reviews and just need to order

Im still getting to grips with current tech but from memory i think the nvidia 600 series has some type of sync technology to bring it inline with the monitor refresh rate

All cards have VSync, at least all new cards, but only the new nVidia ones have 'Adaptive VSync', which turns VSync off when the FPS drops below the refresh rate of the monitor. This is to stop stuttering.

Yes thats it, the adaptive one. Like you said it stops stuttering, would this mean then that if you bought a 120hz monitor and didnt have the adaptive vsync then you may have more stuttering than if you bought the 60hz monitor.

I would suppose it's possible, yeah. Although, I don't know for sure. If you go for a 120Hz monitor and you're playing some intensive games it may be worth turning vsync off as it would be unlikely you'll reach 120fps.

vsync is a load of cobblers imo, it introduces filthy input lag and makes me play worse. I use afterburner (rivatuner underlay) to limit my fps to 120. No need for vsync that way

No idea why nvidia didn't just implement this as a feature rather than 'adaptive vsync'.. I guess it's not as 'marketable'.

To clarify vsync slightly, it locks the frames to the refresh rate. if you unable to meet the refresh rate in frames then you are locked to a lower multiple instead. For 60hz monitors that means when you fall to only being able to produce 59fps you get locked to 30fps. Console style. Adaptive vsync just switches off the vync when you can't meet the refresh rate.

Bringing this topic full circle maybe the outcome is then that if you have dual gpu's or the top end card, get 120hz otherwise get ips ?
