Ok thinking about purchasing one of these for my kids. Just one for them to share. My 6y.o. has been eying one for some apps she wants to play with and my 4y.o. who is autistic loves interactive things. I have not really handled any of these to see what is what on them or know really what all they can do. I know its a lot more than I expect (like my iPhone 4S). I'll be doing some lengthy research before purchasing one but what to know y'alls thoughts on them as to which is better and why it may be better at this or that. this is not going to be a toy for them but a learning tool. Specially for my autistic child. I also know there are lots of models on each plus some I didnt mention (trying not to look stupid for not knowing proper name lol) so please post thoughts on any tablet I may of failed to mention.

Thanks

I have heard rumors of the Ipad Mini which would be very cool. The Microsoft surface also looks to be a promising tablet. If you are looking for something that wont break the bank you can check out the Kindle Fire or the Nook.

thanks for the input kindle is one were looking at not sure if mini will work with my autistic child

From my experience with Apple stores near me, there's a "children's" section of the stores with iPads filled with apps for kids. May be worth taking your kids over there and giving it a little tester?

i just hadnt pulled the trigger on a tablet.. im geekie technical, but they dont blow
my skirt up, yet... ive been eye-ballin the nexus 7, but i just hadnt found out
what id use it for.. already got a TV remote, a flashlight, army knife, a calculator...
but i see the childrens using them, so theres got to be s'mthin' im missing!

I've been researching tablets recently, and can't make up my mind. The Nexus 7 & Kindle Fire HD seem to be hot atm. The Kindle seems very tied into the Amazon store for downloading books, mp3's etc and uses a highly customised version of android 4.0, and you have to pay £10 extra for the privilege of opting out of the ads... The Nexus seems to be a more pure device based on android 4.1 Apparently a 32GB version is due for release on th 29/10 which is set to replace the 16GB version.

is that L10 a month or one time fee??? hoping to have time tonight to sit and research them better.

Yep its a one time up front fee of £10, i.e. you pay either £199 (with special offers - advertising) or £209 (without special offers). That's for the 32gb variant.

How about a POV Protab?

They should be out soon and with a clean Android 4.1 JB. No bloat ware and not even Chrome is installed :P Ive been thinking of buying one myself. But I have a good smartphone so I decided not to buy one. Reviews seem pretty positive and its only 240-250 euro's

yeah I was able to look for a little bit during lunch break and saw the special advertising thing you talked about. we have a friend who also has an autistic child saying get a Ipad2 with 32gb

There's also a rumour that the "iPad Mini" or "iPad Air", a 7 inch iPad will be released tomorrow 23/10.

yup and the microsoft surface is about to release also kinda looking for a larger screen though things tend to be sterring towards the Kindle fire HD 8.9

I suppose one of the most key things is what s/w is best for your kids, and what platform will that be available on.

We all love the hardware, but the software in some respects is far more important.

that is a good point I need to get to a store and play with them all for awhile and see what is going to work best. I already know the scope of the hw side i want or think I'll need large screen fast processing with very decent graphics and 32Gb min This is where the Kindle fire HD 8.9 comes in at 8.9 in screen 254ppi at 1920 x 1200 only 10ppi less than the Ipad3's retina display theres is .8 in larger and a whopping 2048 x 1536 but they also have a whopping price tag to go with it lol

I'm definitely interested in what you end up with, when I get the funds I'll be in the market for one myself.
