ok i have my fibre internet deal with plus net and my package is 40mbps dl speed

but this morning when watching stuff on bbc iplayer i noticed it was buffering a bit and the video would freeze and become jumpy every now and then. i thought maybe it was my GPU playing up again so shut down the pc removed and replaced the GPU restarted the pc and tried to carry on watching the program but it was still the same.

this time i used the BT wholesale speed tester and i was getting 3 times faster speeds than the max thats on my package and about 50mbps more than my line handle (or more than the max speed i could get when i was on their top fibre package)

i just wanted to ask what guys and girls as to if this could be the reason for the bad video play back poor website/forum performance due to data loss maybe.

Won't affect your apps due to packet lost.

It could just be the server you were connected to was slowing down.

If you think it's your internet, i'd restart modem/router.

It wasn't clear from you post if BT is your provider, or merely where you went to measure speeds. Always try to go measure speeds at a 3rd party site known for reliability and accuracy, as opposed to most of the provider speed tools. In the US something like Broadbandreports.com is widely trusted, whereas my own provider's tools will at the very least have a shorter route and bias to make their own service come off as better.

The tool used to measure your net performance should at the very least give some indication of what your packet loss is, and how much buffer bloat with which your provider or even your router is subjecting you to. Look for this evaluation, because it likely is directly affecting your perceived issues. To resolve buffer bloat, try looking into buffer depth settings on your router, like fq_codel, PIE, or other settings under something like Smart Queue Management. Frequently routers will build too large a queue of data being sent to you, and queue management can be tweaked to reduce its affect on your streaming or gaming. Another thing to look at is updating your router firmware, or replacing it with equipment that is more current, has better options, and isn't merely the thing your provider wants you to pay them to use.

Problem is likely to be Plus Net.

Average download speed is not that important as long as it is high enough. It is when you get big dips due to things like your provider having too many active users at certain times of the day or maintenance work.

Another thing that can cause problems is services like Sky which connect to the net. If they have not installed it properly and there are any faults in the connection to the net this can lead to all sorts of problems with your broadband and phone services. It took BT engineers multiple visits over more than 10 years to find the above problem with my setup and even then they could not fix it properly, in the end I upgraded to Sky Q which is wireless when connecting to the net which fixed the problem.

I've been with Plusnet for 6 years now I had their top tier Unlimited Fibre 120Mbps Down 20Mbps Up for 4 years then switched to save money I've been on 52Mbps Down 10Mbps Up since and never had a problem. I agree with SuB though iPlayer is tripe for a smooth stream same goes for 5 on demand and ITV Player, if you really want to test your line you should be using fast.com, speedtest.net & pingtest.net.

To flush your DNS type the following at command prompt and hit enter.

ipconfig/ flushdns

If you're still getting it bad try flushing your DNS and resetting your router, don't reset your router too often in one sitting though as the exchange will see this as an issue and reset your profile which means your speeds will go up and down like crazy for a couple of days while they find a comfortable bandwidth. I did have technical issues last year where an Openreach engineer had switched my Fibre Purse at the cabinet for the faulty one of my neighbours because he couldn't be bothered to walk back to his van, it took 9 engineer visits to figure that one out.

I've never had an issue with Iplayer ever, no matter what connection I am on. I only had 6m at one point, and although it went into low res it worked fine

well ive just restarted the router and for the whole of five mins it was stable at 36mbps but has now jumped back up to 105mbps

i have used iplayer, itv player, youtube and others with no issues. its only been the last two weeks that the issues have started, thinking maybe it could have been caused by the weather, maybe water has got into a line or something but its now becoming a real pain where websites used to load pretty as soon as you had pressed enter it now takes a good few seconds to show up (behaves like im back on standard ADSL and my adsl speeds are really bad like 1mbps dl)

120mbps on a BT line? how? Did you manage to get FTTP ?

RE: DNS, definitely try and switch to 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 for your nameservers, the default ones from most IPSs are pants, that won't however resolve speed issues, that's just initial connection establishment, once you've got the IP of the content, it should stream just fine (unless you're being routed through somewhere daft)

Precisely, it goes low res, it shouldn't have to pretty much ever on most connections in the UK.

That does sound like DNS issues to me, daft question, but have you updated windows recently? The anniversary update screwed my internet for a while, way-back-when...

As for replacement modem, I actually ditched their new one and went back to an old BT + technicolor crappy thing that we had before we moved and the connection has been stable, (you can also remote into the modem and force the nameservers to google's for better DNS etc). I'm still in the market for an end-game replacement for it, but I'm currently considering Virgin as they've just installed in our village and I want faster than BT speeds tbh.

No just good old FTTC, although I'm only about 30 foot from the cab It was good but not necessary for my needs plus the provided BT Modem used to crap itself at anything higher than 100Mbps. Since Plusnet started with these new Hubs everything is hunky dory I actually have 2 spare (admin mess up).

So you're telling me you got >80Mbps from the line? or are you referring to your wireless/lan speed ?

last I checked, you cannot get higher than 78/80 on a FTTC line? like, it's a service limit... no-one can get it, no matter how close you are?



Edit: Ignore everything I just said, just spotted BT offering 100 with a garantee now since 2018 Jan. Guess I've been out of the game looking at net speeds too long. Hey ho
